Internet TV options? Anyone use this type of service?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just have my laptop hooked up to my TV and use Netflix and Navi-X through XBMC. Hulu is better for TV shows but Netflix is better for movies. Navi-X can be a pain sometimes but its totally free and you can find just about anything. You can't run it on Roku and you need to jailbreak the AppleTV2 to run it...there is no jailbreak for AppleTV3 so the 2's cost a lot of money now and are only 720p. You can also run it off an Android phone or Boxee Box. I don't really have any experience with Roku or AppleTV but Boxee works very well but it is the most expensive of the three. I have like 30 free cable channels so I can watch a lot of sporting events but don't get MMA unless its on Fox. I don't get ESPN either but you can watch ESPN online.

I never considered using one of the gaming systems. We have both the xbox 360, and PS3. I just went straight to ROKU for research. I wonder if there are any real differences. Ill have to check more into the game system stuff I guess. Thanks for the info so far, any more is appreciated.

You have a ps3 and bought the roku?! That's what I use. Has apps for Netflix, Amazon Video, Vudu, Hulu, YouTube, etc, and it's a Blu-ray player. With a ps3 the roku is redundant.

Nope, I haven't purchased anything yet. This is reseach prior to purchasing. I am just now thinking about chaing up my services, so I wanted to get a general opinion, as I know that at least some people have been though this. If my current provider can get my services up and running reliably I wont be changing anything. I was basically looking into this as a plan B. Im glad I did as I do not use the gaming systems, so I had no idea that they had these options built in.

What electronic equipment do you have already? I know you're saying you haven't bought anything yet, but I'm sure you already have something, like a laptop. I urge you to look into Navi-X. Even if you just have a desktop PC, you can at least try it out and even if you stick with cable, it's still worth having. You can even run XBMC/Navi-X on Raspberry Pi.

Ah I see, thought you had already bought it. I don't know about other gaming consoles since I only own a PS3 but it should do everything you need under Video Services. Just make sure you're running the latest software on the PS3.

Wii, Xbox, ps3, new blu ray players all have all the things Jose and I have mentioned.

I tried the laptop to tv conversion but hate the way the image is distorted as it upgrades sizes. Rather watch directly from the laptop in bed

When I connect my laptop to my tv there's a setting I have to change so it converts the format properly, usually it autodetects the tv and adjusts itself when I plug in a hdmi cable but sometimes I have to do it manually.

That's probably your graphics card and/or drivers.

I'm not sure what I want to replace my laptop with as a streaming device on my living room TV so I don't have all the wires running through it, but I'm going to go with something that I can run Navi-X on, which you can do with a regular Xbox, but none of those other options. Probably going to look into a barebones system or pocket PC or something similar.
