Is a .002 salinity change enough to kill fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i thought he said he mad sure the temp was the same

were you doing a water change or adding becuase of evaporation?

I was doing a water change and matched the tank temp before adding the water. I was doing the change to keep the water in good shape and managed to kill 5 fish. The other two are still active and eating showing no symptoms of a problem. Guess I will have to mark this one as a mystery. Whatever it was all five of them, from 3 different species, all droped at the same time. I will be even more meticulous from now on. If anyone thinks of anything else that could have caused it please let me know. If you have any kind of input or advice it is appreciated. I am feeling like a total rookie, having killed five fish all at once.

P.S It is nice to have all the people on MFK that get it. The people around hear keep asking if they were expensive or not. As if killing inexpensive fish is somehow more acceptable.:screwy: Besides I prefer not talk about the money I spend on fish with non-fish people. They already think I am nuts as it is.

opps missed the bit about the temp being matched... it definatly is a weird one though.... are you sure nothing else changed? There are a number of things that could have killed them other then the standard problems, but at the same time, most of those would be noticable, like a huge shockwave haha, (which if the aquarium is glass it would likely have been broken). So I don't have any idea, even with parastites its doubtful that the salinity change would have been enough to kill different spiecies. I could see a bunch of the same spiecies being weak and being killed by it, but multiples? and without prior signs? not likely.

u said a ph of 7.4-8.6 ......that type of flucuation can definatly kill ur fish....
ph needs to b kept the same... fish can adapt to wide ranges of ph...
i have fish in my tank that prefer a nuetral ph but my water is 7.6 doesnt matter,
but if my ph suddenly went + or _ .5 id definatly lose some fish.....

No sudden change. That is the low and hi of the range I have had over a couple of weeks of tracking. It started at the high end and slowly came down. Then It stabilized and slowly went back up a little. I will get a current reading and post it.

did you use a different type of salt mix

did you use a different type of salt mix

No. I used instant ocean to set up the tank and have kept using the same thing.

well a salinity change can effect fish in a stressful way to lead to death but not overnight, temp change from the water change could have contributed but since the tank is cycling I think it was a bit of all three how long is the system been up?
