after watching these fish in the wild, It will be hard for me to ever keep an individual over 10 inches in an aquairum. Which is why I will be constructing a very large pond.
I think once these fish get to a certain size, they are not kept correctly in anything smaller than a 20x20 foot space.
I feel this way about Baracuda, Trevially, dorado, and a couple other sellect fish that are built for 1 thing. speed.
True..but they are available to everyone...and they will continue to sell...we just have to live with that.
So instead of telling them to get 2000 gallon tanks...(because that is unrealistic and pointless)...I tell them to get something like a 96x30x24...because even that is better than a standard 240.
It probably is true when you say that only very very few hobbyists should be able to keep cichla...but we all know now... thats just not going to happen.

If someone that was that truely dedicated to the hobby and well being of there cichla they would go out of there way to build and or buy a tank of the correct size. Regardless of the obstacles.

You make a valid point. Also, I dont recomend a 2000gallon. I usually go for a 600+ for a few adults.
I consider a 2000gallon to small, for true adults. Especially large temensis and or Orinos.
If you must keep these fish in a tank. go for something bigger than 4 feet wide, and 8 feet long.
I built my pond at age 16.. on a LFS wage. If I can do it, Anyone can, with the correct drive.
Sure it wont look like that of a public aquarium, but it will be better for your fish than any tank.
checking out these pictures (of the pond) brings tears to my eyes. I really miss that set up and fish.

where do you live? move into a place with a garage. Settle for a crappy place, but one that has a garage. I would have no problems living in a tent if I cold have a house/garage full of fish
