Is a 75 gallon tank enough for ONE oscar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Also, from the angle of your photo, it appears that your decorative log takes up a good portion of the tank and limits your Oscar’s ability to swim around the entire 75G tank. If this is the case, I would recommend removing the 🪵 log. Also what is the deal with the unsightly algae/brown vegetable matter floating on the surface of the aquarium? It gives the impression you are not doing routine aquarium maintenance and is probably why you received such a negative initial response. Thanks for rescuing the Oscar and giving him a better environment than he previously had, but it seems like you have the ability and resources to do even better for him.
THose are some top floating plants i was given. The roots look bat in the picture but usually those are not seen. Im currently working on moving him up to a 210 gallon tank.

I am by no means an expert, so please dont take this advice to heart and maby someone with more experience can chime in here. From what i know of oscars in tanks this size, a sponge filter is just not going to cut it. You need a fluval fx6 canister filter. They cost about £250, but from my research before getting my own oscar, i really think that sponge filter is why the water looks so poor.

The fact you are asking is a good thing. It's a nice oscar but it does deserve better which you probably realise.

I have two at about 12" each they are big fish and pretty active and theres not much room there for yours especially as you have all that decor in there.

I would remove that for a start and the floating plants. With your filtration being so poor I would stop feeding meat and guppies which are unecessary any way it'
ll be fine on the pellets that you feed.
Obviously upgrade if you can but if not it needs more filtration the thought of just a sponge filter filtering a big fish in that tank is a bit wild.

As for a silver arowana I have a 9x3x2.5' tank with 6ft sump and I wouldnt keep a silver in there they are huge active fish and definitely need a pond

There is nothing wrong with floating plants, in fact they will help to remove nitrate in between water changes,
in fact I would add more floaters
Below is my 300 gal system and I keep cichlids that only only get half the size of an oscar.

I am able to maintain an undetectable nitrate levels with lots of plants, and a 40% water change every other day.

And, unless you want to see a recurrence of HITH, you will need to increase water changes to limit nitrate least a low of 5 ppm.
At a pH of 7.6, and a nitrate concentration of 20 ppm, the chances will be increased for HITH relapse

And of course you will need a much larger tank, much stronger filtration, and wll need to do at least 100% water changes per week, if you want an Arowana, and you will need a minimum tank size of at least 250 gallons.

Reddit is generally awful, don't sweat that too much. Welcome tp MFK

I do agree a 75 gallon is too small for an Oscar for life. The fish is in a much better situation than you found him in, if you have no other option, sure keep him in the 75. A 125+ is much better for these guys. If you are limited in space, a 110 gallon is the same footprint but quite a bit taller, and would be a good bit better for the fish. It seems like you are taking good care of it either way
