IS BARRING NORMAL ON ELECTRIC YELLOWS?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Barring is the natural coloring on electric yellows, all of the natural ones have it, or its just a rarer strain of it that doesn't.
The barring is either from stress, or the male being dominant.

I personally like the barring. But a lot of people are the exact opposite.

For the most part, I have only known to see the barring when they are stressed.

My yellow has barring every one's in a while.

Barring on electric yellow L. caeruleus is not uncommon, especially when stressed, but it is also very undesirable. People want clean yellow fish. Any electric yellows exhibiting dark barring or dark coloration on the face any time other than when stressed should not be bred for the purpose of distribution of the fry. If you want fry out of your fish you can keep the fry. Most folks want electric yellow electric yellow labs however.

I believe it is a personal preference and that most dominant males when displaying do show the bearding at least to an extent... I don't like when it looks really dark and muddy but, I think the beard and the bars look distinguished in a male and I also like how mine has a very vibrant yellow coloration as well... mabye I am bias but I think the male I have in question is a good looker... anyone agree??

I don't have them anymore, but I used to have a few electric yellows. As stated previously, barring is normal. Mine all had the stripes at one point. As they got bigger they disappeared, which leads me to believe that it may be stress like everyone is saying.

All in all, nothing to worry about. Nice lookin' fish! Love your avatar also!

Ad Kongings told the pres of our fish club here that it is very normal in wild ones.

well I'd say HE knows what he's talking about :) Thanks! I think I will try to pick out all the ones with no barring (about 2% of the offspring I have don't have any barring) and see if I can create my own strain of pure yellows that are line-bred to please the people who don't like barring even though I have no problem with it myself all yellows have great personalities and look great in a tank IMO....
