Is fishkeeping cruel?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The other aspect of this which some people may not realise (or agree with) is that if someone THINKS it is cruel then it IS and if someone does not think it is cruel then it IS NOT. Controversially, the debate extends about whether many animals/sentinal beings know what cruelty is. ie does the aspect of cruelty exist, or do they simply know whether it is satisfied or not.

touche!

Genesis 1:26

26 Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”

Arachnar I am mostly speaking of wild caught fish. Like a clown for example. There is a massive difference between wild caught and home bred, in color and in character. I have both. Now I don't believe so much in wether or not the fish will notice the difference in many things because there is instinct. The wild caught clown Percula for example is basically born and raised in an anemone. This is why 99% (Iam sure it might be a little less) will host an anemone if provided with one, and many of the home bred have no idea what the hell it is. I do believe in instinct also. I really do not think thereis too much of a difference in many traits from home bred vs. wil caught.
Going back to the bluegills...........I have been messing with aquariums on and off for 20 years or so. I feel I have a pretty good idea wether or not one of my fish are stressed (unhappy). It just amazes me how unstressed these guys seem to be.
I do now there are some fish which patrol (I guess you could say "open water" fish). I could see how these guys could get a little stressed, but for the most part I guess I don't see anything being cruel. Of course that being that they are in the hands of an MFKer..... LOL

So who said God knows everything?

I think the intent was to own and use, not necessarily as a target for unnecessary cruelty.
Not saying fish keeping is necessarily cruel. Just that the bible mentions animal husbandry, does it not? Husbandry is a term of respect and responsibility. Not all out slaughter. Like we do to most things.

None of these fish could ever be kept in their wild habitat anyway since most have been mass bred and would die in their natural ecosystem. So you can no longer take the "free willy" perspective anymore and it's now about proper feeding care and not allowing poor fish to breed.

True, but not appropriate. We are talking about containing the life, not where that life came from.
It's like this see...slavery and forced prostitution is wrong.(theoretically, for the sake of this example)
Would it be less wrong if those girls were perfect clones?
Or children of slaves?
Is the life in a bottle better because it began in the bottle? Or is it the same bottle?

Yes, it is cruel. Nature is cruel. People being forced to flee their homes or live on the streets is cruel. Forcing animals out of their habitats and to the brink of extinction is cruel. A lion eating a gazelle is cruel, a big fish eating a little fish is cruel. Most everything is cruel.

Fishkeeping keeping, when done right, ranks very near to the bottom of the Cruel List.

I think its cruel to a extent. If you have tank bred fish, they really have no idea what fish life is really like. They have no idea their true home is a multi trillion gallon house. If you were raised in a bubble and has no access to outside life you would think that its your life and nothing other. Now cruel to me is taking a wild fish, with unlimited amount of space to swim and putting them in a tank.

I agree with that 100%. That's why I don't get too worked up when I see a human performing some small cruelty.
But if we have any dignity as men (yes it's 2008,you can be men too ladies) we should carry ourselves as best we can.
It is a good indication of character when a man can be cruel, but chooses not to.
