just a thought here.

Is it possible that when I previously used metro and focus on his food, that kai was able to separate the food from the meds in his mouth allowing the meds to pass through his gills?

if this is the case then how do I ensure he is actually consuming the meds verses just eating the food? Maybe my treatment would of been ineffective?

I doubt it considering how much Metro you were using, and the length of time that you treated. (3 weeks) Both would be considered excessive by most.

I'm ending the kanaplex treatment today.

Is it safe to assume that the hole is free from bacterial infection at this time? That's the whole point of the kanaplex right?

I don't like to assume much or be dogmatic about a fish I'm not living with and observing day to day, but I suspect the infection's been gone (whether for a few days or whatever) and that the wound/damaged tissue has been healing as I suggested above... my 2 cents

Another thing I wonder is why do I never see red terrors or vieja cichlids with hith?

Rarely see threads about these fish being sick at all now that I think about it.

Just stronger genetics?

Nope. Time to let this fishes immune system take over. Lots of fresh water, a quality diet, and give it some time to heal & recover.
