as we monster aquarists get tanks nearing or breaking the thousands of gallons there are fewer and fewer commercial options for filtration. my question is: is it alright to use pond filters on monster tanks? is there any reason not to use them ? to me they seem like an economical alternitive because most are reasonably affordable and are designed for the volume of water we need.

Yep, you can use them and it has been done before. There are some how-to's out there that goes into using them in tanks.
, Just don't expect most of them to polish the water. Ponds aren't kept as clear as tanks, but you can put in finer filter material to compensate. And most move water at a lower rate so you will have to ramp up accordingly.
Oh, and some are noisier than others.
What's tha matter?, don't want to line the the top of your tank with Ac110's...now there would be a look

the sand filters are what i was looking at, the concept seens sound good i was just wondering if there was any chemical difference to compensate for.
it would be a beautiful thing to have a contiuous waterfall running the entire edge of the tank. and at the cost it would take to purchase them all i might as well make my tank out of wax paper to make up the cost difference 
now that ya got me thinking, wouldnt it be effective to run a large pool filter for bio and mech filtration then run a few (1-3) canisters or hobs to run polishing duty?
