Mine was the same way , 7 month later the aro is my friend and even if i have to move things around in the tank , it stay calm , i can even touch it if i want to ( i dont do it cause am afraid it might bite me) 
Is it always going to be skittish?

Well it's not an issue anymore sadly, I lost the Aro and my Chocolate Cichlid this weekend due to a massive PH drop. (Or so I assume) I added 2 more 2 liters to my DIY Co2 and awoke to all the fish about gone, I quickly did a 50% water change as well as adding this that and the other. The Crap Factory Plecos lived along with the feeders and CAEs but my Chocolate and Aro are gone. 
The PH is still crazy low @ 6.4 as opposed to the normal 7.0, not sure why. I don't know what it was at it's lowest as I began the water change before anything because I didn't want to waste time, didn't matter though. I had that Chocolate for over 2 years too.
