is it possible to have a healthy fish tank without Pleco fish? i truely despise these fish, there bio lode is way too much. i cant stand the 8" long strands off poop in my tank anymore. so i want them out but i also want a healthy fish tank. i do have 4 Mystery snails so i dont really want more of those. i also have live plants which help with the algae. my tank is all tangy so whatever it could be must be some what comparable to the tangys. some one told me about an O' Catfish...i could not find any info about this fish. anyway please send me your suggestions.

no need for any pleco's in any tank set up.

the need for plecos in a tank is a sales ploy by most pet stores they are completly unnesscary they eat algae but not enough of it to make any difference as well as requireing other foods in there diets (i feed my plec cucumber tomato and red pepper with the occassional slice of zuchini)
and they need truly monster tanks (i wouldnt keep a full sized plec in anything less than a 150 (with the appropriate foot print )

so yes you will have a completly healthy tank without a pleco or any type of algae eater

there is no need for a pleco in a tank, if anything it is the contrary. I personally like the big plecos, but don't have the tank space

there is no need to keep a pleco in any tank as everyone said. mine dosent even eat algae. its a carnivore so its totally useless.i took it out of my tank and put it in my growout. dont sweat it. leave the pleco out

Baby common Plecos eat Algae... but adults are carnivores...

Very few of my tanks have Plecos in them… the few Plecos I have are not common Plecos…

I agree thoroughly with the idea this myth was created as a sales ploy to sell Common Plecos…

I didn't want to be the first to say they were carnivores at adult hood because so many people beleive other wise. But its true.

The only pleco I own is in my feeder tank and its purpose is to clean up any dead feeders or algae if it chooses. ANd it doesn't choose algae very often.

really? i wasent aware they were carnivores i alwasy thought they were oppertunistic omnivores (eats everything) a carnivore would imply eating nothing but meat which except for certain plecos (zebra plecos) is not the case

pleco dietary thread

"oppertunistic omnivores which means they eat anything they can get a hold of but primary subsist on fruits/vegetables with some exceptions"

thats my highly paraphrased quote from that post lol

that is exactly what i thought, never thought they would be strictly carnivores. they never come out when i feed the other fish. they always seem to be in the cracks of my rocks or on my glass (doing absolutely nothing) these fish dont even swim. all they do is crap everywhere. THESE FISH SUCK BALLS!!! they are getting out of my tank today:irked:

They very well maybe oppertunistic omnivores,

But mine has the choice of
feeder fish
veggie pellets
algae
java moss
tropical flakes
hakari sinking pellet
occassional fruit and veggies peices

And it chooses to eat dead feeders 99.9999% of the time.

So it seems they will eat what ever it takes to stay alive. But if given the choice its a carnivore.
