Hello Everyone,

Im sure alot of you know how addictive the aquarium fish hobby can be. I my self am a person who sees a fish and has to have it, thats something im working on. Right now im worried about one of my aquariums; its a 55 gallon aquarium which I know is small and ive jam packed the aquarium with fish. I perform daily %10 water changed on the aquarium and it is running on an AquaClear suggested for 70 gallon aquariums, with two small pumps and an air stone for water circulation. The water temperature is maintained at a constant 78f and the fish are fed two to three times daily, they all seem to be getting along fine. Here is the 'stocklist' for the aquarium:

One 12" Pacu
Two 3" Oscars
One 4" Common Pleco
One 4" Clown Knife
One 5" Black Shark

I am well aware of the potential size of these aquarium fish and in about two months will be setting up a 400 gallon indoor pool for these guys and a few others. What im wanting to know basically is; how are the fish for the time being? The pacu is as long as the tank is wide and will soon have trouble turning around. Im really worried that they are in trouble now, will they last for a couple of months? I really care for my fish and want the best for them. Please reply with kind responses, I knove ive got my self into a mess. Im addicted to the hobby

Thank you for your time and responses!

you can grow the other guys out for a year or so at the most, but the pacu needs a new home now IMO

Your tank is underfiltered. Ideally, a predator tank should have an hourly turnover of 10 times the tank's volume. In other words, you should strive for 550+ gallons per hour of filtration for your 55 gallon tank. Although the AquaClear 70 is rated for tanks "up to 70 gallons," it only flows around 300 gph. I'd add another AquaClear 70 and make it an even 600 gph for your tank.

And about that pacu. . . ;)

dude, just get rid of that pacu!

Really IMO the pacu is to large for that tank. Already people say just get rid of it but I know you really like that pacu. I don't think that it is a good idea to keep it in there for two more months but if you do, which I'm sure you will just add a lot more filtration to the tank that way the water can be really clean. So if he is going to be cramped at least the tank will have adequet filtration. If possible just get the pond done ASAP. Cause the quicker you can get him out the better.

I'm glad to here you want to keep him....I would keep my feedings down a touch, and add more filtration, you can't get near the bio activity you need with one AC 70. Then get that 400 ASAP so you can keep your Pacu...

nice fish..i agree you need to get that pond set up

While you are waiting to get the new tank get a 70 gallon rubbermaid water trough and a couple large sponge filters and heaters, it will cost under $100 total. Keep the pacu in that for the time being, they measure 24"tall, 40 1/2"long and 32" wide and are very sturdy. It would provide a resonable home forthe pacu while waiting and that would also improve conditions for your other fish, A sheet of eggcrate light diffuser can work as a lid and all the stuff can be reused for other projects once you get the large tank running.
