The wild types is stil under protected, so we are not allow to get any 1 of them...but i think the selectively aro types from farm breed are more than enough, such as Red, Xback, Hi-back, RTG, banjar red / 1.5red, yellow tail and green...but not for Nami Green Aro, haha.
CITES makes no discrimination between captive bred and wild, as long as it is Scleropages formosus it is classified as an endangered species, so they are all protected. The hobby is only a part of the problem (and probably a small part) the biggest threats to the fish are destruction of habitat and pollution.

As from what I seen, the prices go up when they're not in season (silvers, jardini) I've seen them here in HI for 69-79 dollars right now. The prices will drop as soon as the LFS starts to bring them in again or when it's season again.

axolotls if not already extinct is definately near extinct, but you can buy one for a couple of bux !!!!!

silvers are easily bred by breeders. asian aros are rarer in the wild, most likely due to pollution - but in captivity they are very available.

IS IT TRUE THAT THEY ARE NOT GOING TO BE ALLOWED TO SELL AROWANAS BY 2009 BECAUSE ITS ALMOST IN EXTICTION
TODAY I WENT TO 2 AQUARIUMS NEARBY AND THEY 4 INCH AROS ARE 79 BUCKS
I BOUGHT MINE FOR 40 BUCKS WHEN IT WAS 5 INCHES ABOUT 4 MONTHS AGO :eek:

It depends on what type of Aro you are talking about, Silver? Black? Australian? Asian? African?

Retailer trying to get top dollar from retail market, sounds like...problem here is, if the species is going extinct, then the last thing you want to do is make a market for it...
The reasoning just doesn't make sense...:(

they raise the price because since its the winter, sum fish may die while getting shipped

$1200 for a red here in the us is both illegal and a hell of a deal

Asian aros are being bred in farms throughout asia. If anything, I have noticed a price drop here in Canada as they are becoming more popular (still really expensive). I am working up the courage to buy a Dynamic Red aro (supposed to be redder than a chili red). He is about 5" and costs $1200 (I paid $1000 for my HBRTG about a year ago).

silver and black are nearly the same...dunno why ppl would pay an extra hundred for it...As for silvers, its wierd but they only cost about 20 bucks in toronto for like a 5" one. Jardinis are like $50 at 5". As said before, most of the asian aros you see in the market are captive bred, so we arent really taking anything from nature. Its becuase their habitats are being destroyed. But either way, theyre not even CLOSE to being extinct, maybe rare but not extinct.
