I've been wanting to get into something involving wildlife/fish for my education.

I did not go to college right out of school, so instead of almost being done with a 4 year degree, I will just be starting.

I'm looking to be starting in July, and with summer classes, I will be graduating in 3 years as opposed to 4. This is a Bachelors in Wildlife and Fisheries management.

I work with student loans- so I know all about interest, repayment options, deferments etc..

But... with it being an out of state school (online degree program with 1 year apprenticeship)- tuition is $18,000 on top of $9,000 already.

In all, I will owe over $100,000 worth of student loans.

There is NO school in my state (PA) that offers this degree even remotely close enough to work FT and commute, and no one does online.

This is Oregon State University btw.

Is this worth it? Would you do it? :nilly:

I wouldn't. If you had a job lined up that required that degree, then go for it, other wise, don't do it. IMO

Well this would allow me a job to work with wiildlife agencies etc type jobs. Can't even line up a job in this field without a.bachelors degree.

I got a bachelors of science degree online now can't find a job and have to pay back almost a 100 grand. You don't learn nearly what you would online compared to going on campus. On campus when its test time you either know it or you don't. Online it open book. If I could do it again id either go on campus or not at all.

I wouldn't spend that much on online classes. Sometimes you have to look around in different schools' sections too. I wanted to study ichthyology, but there are only a handful of schools in the country that offer that. However, one of the local colleges offers biology degrees; one of which is a focus in aquatic life, and something like that could possibly help line you up with the right job.

I also think that zoology is pretty common in schools. Awesome degree that gives you well rounded general classes in a lot of subjects such as ichthyology, herpetology, primatology etc..

What is the degree called? Is it Forestry, Fisheries, and Wildlife?
Then you choose a certain topic you want to focus on?

I'm doing this. I'm finishing up the general education classes at a community college then OSU for that degree. This is an actual campus degree though.

The degree is wildlife and fisheries management.

Its an all online degree.

It's probably just a version of the campus degree at most colleges.

For how much your spending idk if I would do it.

Maybe research all the job options and whats available first before you try to get the degree. 100grand, and no guarantee of a good job after you put that much money and effort sounds like a bad investment, unless you just want to do it for the education.

I've researched the job availability- and here in PA the fish and game are always hiring, but you need the degree, and it has to be a bachelors. They won't hire you before hand while you are earning it either.

I have a potential job lined up working for Blackwater Koi IF the owner decides to open a facility up here in PA with one of his business partners. I mean, it's not much, but it's a start...

I know that a lot of people go to school for something that will set them up for a good job in the future, but in all honesty, how many people go to school, and actually get a job that they love? I know it's a lot of money, but I don't want to have a job just to get by that I dread waking up to everyday.

The ONLY thing that scares me is the loan repayment once school is over.. ugh... $1000 month- That's a lot noting I only make about $1400 a month. Not to mention I live with my fiance, and we have bills.
