does metallic lead disolve in ph 7 freshwater ???

Nope. When the pH drops it will. I don't have a solubility chart as you have guessed but it likely follows the rules of most everything else (higher solubility in lower pH's).

You have to keep in mind that not everyone has your maintenance dedication. A large number of MFKers don't even own test kits.

Lead is used to weigh down plants in thin substrate. It should be fine. Lead sinkers from your local fuishing and tackle shop would probably do the trick.

Most sinkers in NY are non-lead like steel ...

Fish are always nibbling, they will get lead in them.

My advice, for what its worth, is no. its just asking for trouble.

When I first read about Mercury introduced via vaccinations possibly being the root cause of the increased autism rate in new borns in the US I was irate.

Then i remembered something.... I absorbed 10,000 vaccination doses when I was 5 and I broke a thermometer by holding it under the hot facet. I saved all the mercury and played with it for hours. Rolled it around in my hands.. tried rubbing it into stuff.

Just a little perspective.

Cool, can we come over and watch you tick? :D

Try using a quantity of natural clay for weight.

That doesn't mean it won't be present at all, just in substantially lower quantities. If it didn't dissolve at all, lead bird shot (for duck/geese) wouldn't be such a problem around small freshwater bodies of water. Granted a lot of them are acidic, but not all of them.

And I'm not sure what the equilibrium concentration will be as I don't have the equilibrium constant for the reaction.

That's because you'd be playing with Hg with an oxidation state of 0, which isn't all that dangerous. Ionic mercury (oxidation state of 2+, which means it has lost two electrons) and the organic compounds it forms are very dangerous.

To solve this mystery, we can ask some ancient Romans. They have a lot of experience with lead in their water....Oh wait, they are all dead. :nilly:
