Is sand a good substrate for pacu\oscar tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
PFS over here costs $28.00/50 lbs. so I settled for this, $8.25/100 lbs. at HD. Very fine but sinks fast and you have to rinse it really good. I have 3 oscars BTW. No filter problems so far.

thats not bad for the price of 8.25. so how do u throughly wash it? just run water over it and sift through it?

i think ill go with pool filter sand.. i jus have to find it

Do they have different colors of sand available? I wouldn't mind having a black sand substrate. I think it would pop the rays colors nicely.
I think this is the only one that says "can be used for fish ponds" or something to that effect somewhere in the bag. Its white with vey little specks of black almost unnoticable.

What do you mix with the quikrete to make cement? Is it just water?
If you're referring to quickrete ready mixed cement then yes.

Have any pics of it out the bag to see color and grain size?
I will post later just for reference.

Yes, but I have to warn you it will take a looooong time lol. Even after rinsing it for that long it still turned my water hazy every time my fishes sift through it for like 2 days but after that everything was fine. Too bad my local HD doesn't carry PFS. I've seen the grains of PFS and I liked it but kinda expensive for me might as well spend the money on fish food or something.

lol long time?? .. im allergic to that lol...i guess ill throw out the playsand then.. since its to fine.. the pacus will always kick it up
