Most definitely avoid tank water around mouth, eyes etc; for reasons Duanes mentioned, and other horrror stories I've heard, nothing major but would rather avoid!

Some of you don't mind fish urine, fish feces, and god knows how many various bacteria found in the average aquarium, swirling around in your mouth? Ok then ....
When I left working for the fish store my hands were so terrible. Pretty sure I had a vibrio infection. Being exposed to aquarium water on a daily basis my fingers were swollen like sausages and cracked and rashy. I used to slather my hands with udder balm at night and put socks over them. Never really helped. So yes, fish water is gross.
A side note. You don't need to suck on the hose to siphon . Just push the hose or gravel vac up and down in the water a few times to get it started.
Exactly ...plenty of ways to prime a siphon hose, they even sell gadgets for just that.

I was going comment on that myself. Why start the syphon with your mouth? I usually just fill up the hose with water from the sink to start syphon.
Too much effort for me lol
While I start the siphoning via my mouth, my mouth actually never makes contact with the hose itself. I hold the hose end in my clenched fist and place my lips against my thumb and index fingers.
