Is the hobby slowly dwindling?

I've had to down-size the amount of aquariums I have in my house, not because of a lack of funds or a dwindling hobby, but because of a lack of time. I have noticed that simple species of fish that used to be fairly common and easy to find are no longer that way. I've also noticed a general disregard for the health of fish at some fish stores near me, both chain and locally-owned. Could it be that money is driving this lack of culling of sick, deformed fish that should not be sold? I personally, think so. I, also, think that with the prices of everything rising right now that could be a HUGE factor in some of the reasons why fish stores are not culling sick/deformed fish, thus muddying up the hobby.

I do feel like the quality of local fish around me has dwindled down, but there are ways around that. There is one fish breeder in particular that I trust for healthy, live specimens to ship, and with the quality of his fish being exceptional, I will in the future just order from him.
