Is there a difference?

Biomax has a huge amount of surface area. Biomax and creamic rings are pretty much the same creamic rings. But some are more porous than others thus allowing for more surface area for bacteria to colonize. If you take biomax and compare them to say marineland creamic rings, there is a huge difference in porosity.

I've used all sorts of biological media over the years and to be honest, never found one to "perform" compellingly better than the next. They all work fine, IMO.

Regarding "polishing pads", I do not use them in my canister filters for the reason that they jam up with material too quickly and most of the water then either slows down or bypasses them (depending on the design of the filter...). Coare foam sponge and then some of the blue fiber pad has always worked well for me.

Just my 2-cents.

I saw some fluval biomax and aqua clear biomax. Are they the same? Idk what kind of ceramic rings I have. It's in my fx5. I'll take a pic later and post it here.

I've always felt that ceramic rings is a generic term for the type of media while biomax etc are the specific brand names used by companies to try to differentiate their product

I'd think they were the same since they are both called biomax, which is hagen's term for their creamic rings... and both fluval and aquaclear is part of hagen's line of products.

Oh, and if you want poishing pads... polyfil batting made for blankets and quilts work well (make sure you get the regular one and not the one thats fire retardant). You can find them at stores like walmart, kmart, or any art's and crafts store around you.
