Is there a goal here

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my goal was to get a tank big enough to be buried in. now that I'm there, I wish I had gotten one big enough so I could be buried with my other tanks.

Yeah.. I'm about there I think. but the last piece to my puzzle is a doozy so will take a few more years to come to fruition but at the same time kinda calm and at peace w/ it. our 120W is still a grow-out for our aba.. and though his tank size will change as he grows.. we don't really change anything else about his husbandry. Our 40B atm is our community set-up.. and I'm pretty happy w/ it.. as the aba outgrows his tanks I've been using them as community tanks... stepping up with them. So as the community tank size grows again i'll prolly add some more of this or that to fill it in.. but the search for that new cool oddball ect is out of my system. At this point I know what I like and don't like. Once I can have something to house big gar and rays again i'll be happy. for now its just upgradeing the abas tank and following that w/ an ever larger community set-up w/ lots of color and action to keep our children entertained... never thought i'de enjoy a community tank again but watching and hearing the wonder and delight in our 2yr old has warmed me up to the lil' schooling fish ect again.

I'm never satisfied and change my mind on things all the time. I want to think when I set up my next tank I will be good once it's finished, but honestly, I'll leave it as is for a while and then get bored with it and change it. Maybe not so much as far as stock because I love the fish I have and I plan to get 5 more. But, as far as scape and everything I'll change it every 6 months or so. The only scape I've ever kept for a long period of
Time is my 120, and it's only been like this for 6 months, but I'm not bored with it. ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1389934581.825094.jpg

Yeah this happened to me a about 6 months ago, I lost all interest and I had an empty cycled 120g in my bedroom and I just couldn`t really decide what to put in there and I was feeling like I just lost interest. I focused a lot more on reptiles and other pets in that period but the thing with this hobby is it always has more to offer. You will always think, lets try my hand at breeding, or marine, or a species tank etc. there is always more you just sometimes feel like not doing it and other times you feel like doing it.

I got very bored of the hobby keeping cichlids. I kept cichlids for over 10 years and I had a 225 gallon with about 5 fish that beat the crap out of eachother and any other fish I put in there. I couldn`t ever buy new fish or anything. So the best thing I did was give up cichlids for a while. I just had large semi aggressive fish like a Gourami, grow out some tinfoil barbs, catfish, bichirs etc.

Now i just welcomed into my 225 the first 2 cichlids I have had in around 2 years and they fit in perfectly with my current stock. here they are,

with my journey in fish keeping the last few years I can definately say that the hobby always has something more to offer, you just somtimes have to make a change or try something new

I kind of think I'm like most enthusiasts who will probably never get enough of fish keeping. My fish are like my children, I will always take care of them and love them no matter how old they get. And like one of the guys said, there's always maintenance to do so it's a never-ending story.

I kinda sorta relate. I don't want lots of tanks. I want a few large tanks. Quicker and easier to maintain. By ths summer I will just have a 700, 240, 2 150, & 2 120. I can do my maintenance on all of them in about an hour a week. Of course draining and filling take longer, but they are large enough I don't have to pay close attention. I don't want 30-40 tanks anymore!

I've only been back into it a year but it seems the goal a lot of us have is to have a legit for-life tank for our favorite types of fish. I'm not trying to operate a 1,000 ga tank, the only way I would want anything over like 700 is if it was an outdoor pond haha.

My goal is to have a tank large enough to house fully grown specimens of my favorite species (up to the biggest species per group). Bichirs are #1 in my book so I need something big enough for a congicus in the end. Then it goes peacock bass (so big enough for a temensis), African tiger fish (do not want a gatf though lol), datnoids, and arowana. So as long as I end up w/ a huge tank that can house all of these, my goal will be met. None of my picks have to do w/ being the "ultimate" of anything, I don't want the meanest/biggest/craziest tank or fish. Just the ones I think are truly beautiful and fascinating. Of course I'll have grow out/QT tanks going, probably not more then a couple, keep em alive w/ some of the smaller species I enjoy.

I will probably end up w/ a fahaka or Mbu single specimen tank though.. having one seems so fun since they are so interactive but I simply don't have the space to properly own one right now

I would say the goal to this hobby is your happiness. its not about how many fish or tanks or how big its about what your happy with and once your happy with it I would say goal met.

I agree with fishysweet.

you can have a community tank, or african cichlids. fish don`t have to be huge for it to be an enjoyable hobby. Peacock bass to me are the most ugly and boring fish I can possibly think of, but people go crazy for them on here. everyone has a different Idea of what they want in a tank. so the main goal is for us to be happy. If you want big fish, big tanks, small tanks, breeding projects, whatever it all works out in the end if it makes us happy

i agree, peacock bass are boring!-) where i got where i am is buying and selling fish, if i really like a fish i cant bring myself to sell it and thats how ive ended up where i am... first and foremost the tank is my midas' and wyckii's tank, i think although i like my stock i need to steer away from the driving round lfs in search of fish side of the hobby..

i know how you feel op, i dont think fish keeping is enough to have as a sole hobbie thats for sure, im into cars, sports bikes and ma xbox so usually depending on the flavour of the month i'll be busy with something until boom bang into my fish again!-)
