Is there a method to keep water cold?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To answer your question, you are going to need a chiller, though they are expensive (many time more so than a heater). I really don't think a fridge would work.

I have heard of people making homemade chillers using mini fridges and copper piping.

However, since you have to ask about this, I think it is safe to assume you are in over your head and do not know how to properly care for these fish.

Now we just wait for the update that they died, or he let them go. *sigh*

Heat is a major issue for me also. I keep a Goonch and it likes cold, fast moving water. I removed the lid of the tank and keep as much water flow at the surface as possible. Just point the return lines to the surface to make surface agitation. I also use a fan to push air across the surface of the aquarium. My house temp is at 80 and I'm able to keep the Goonch tank at 74. I never turn the light on, it's not even on the tank anymore because I removed the lid. Good luck!

These are the kind of answers i wanted not a bunch of whiners telling me how cruel it is to take two of fish fry out of a lake with thousands of fish. Thanks for being resourceful to those that gave me helpfull responses quickly. You made the fishs' short stay a lot better.

No one said it was cruel to take them, we said it is ILLEGAL to do so. You also broke another law and endangered an entire ecosystem by releasing them back into the wild.

I just caught some what i believe to be Macanaugh trout fry. They are about 3 inches long and i caught them with a net off shore in water about 2 feet deep. The water there is about 71 degrees. My 55 gallon is 85 degrees with no heater running and the lights on all day. Im just going to keep them in a 10 gallon untill they get big then i will put them in a pond. I was thinking about putting my frige on a low level and just putting em in there but i dont really want to do that. They are in great shape right now but i dont really want them to die so please tell me how to keep them cold.
You can't even spell "Mackinaw" or "fridge" correctly. You also live in Sacramento, where it's hot during the summer. How in the world are you going to put these things in a pond and expect them to live? Even in your house, the water is 85 degrees. It's even hotter outside. I've lived in Sacramento for 6 years before, so I know the weather there. Plus, Sacramento is home to the Department of Fish and Game. People keep native fish in other states because it's legal. In California, it is illegal. At the very least, you shouldn't announce on a public forum what illegal things you have done. That is stupidity.

I have illegal fish! :) I must be stupid too......... oh I'm a bad speller ;)
It's not so much the illegal fish, it's going around announcing it. Back home in Cali, I had all sorts of illegal items in my house(not just fish). But, I never confessed on a public forum what I had and so forth. There are certain things you should keep on the DL.

It's over and done with. To be honest no one is gonna go after this guy for 2 small fish. If this guy netted buckets full then maybe. They just don't have the resources to go after everyone who took a fish or two out of the wild. If he broke any laws he did so ignorantly. If some one knows the laws then breaks them then they deserve to be ridiculed IMO.

I have to agree with the others about the irresponsibility of your actions..but to answer your question a chiller would be the best option. As others have said you could make a home made chiller with a fridge and pipping, but IMO that is to unreliable. A chiller would be a better option (they tend to run pretty expensive though). I would also make sure there is decent current as well as have the time to do frequent water changes as trout tend to prefer more pristine conditions.

Dont use a fridge as a chiller. there not meant to be on constantly, they cycle on and off. you'll blow the motor in a few months, if not weeks.
