anyway i feed my fish everything i cna to get the best varied diet for them

I also feed what i hear what they eat in the wild, insects, fish, small mamals, lizards, and amphibians

with the added pellots, blood worms, smelt, shrimp and other things

I'll admit I like to see a shark eat a hippie at the beach....

I am generally bothered by the attitude towards feeder bred mice.
The attitude often seems like if they are cheap and plentiful, anything goes.

They are fed live to piranhas and other predatory fish. I don't get why that if they decide to feed these animals mice, they don't get mice that have been humanely pre-killed. Oh it's the entertainment value of seeing a live mouse struggle in fear and make escape attempts.

I have two PEW/white mice. I feel if people got to know and interact with mice, they might think differently. My mice come out when I call them, will curl up and sleep on me, chitter and brux happily at me and climb on my hand.
I realize carnivorious animals need to eat, I also hope that people realize these feeder mice do have feelings and don't deserve to be subjected to unnecessary suffering for entertainment value..

I agree wholeheartedly. That is why I can't have a snake. I have known some pretty cool rats in my days... can't seem to justify a snakes belly being full over the life of a rat, or mouse for that matter. But I have fed lizards to my fish. I draw lines on what is food and what isn't... mammals being the line, generally. Ultimately, I quit hunting over compassion for animals... I'm just not compassionate about every life form. I've got a bag of feeders hanging out in my tank... My eels will only eat live food. Sorry PETA. Who knew ethics would ever be this entertaining to read about?

Well I think this thread is about done. It seems to have deteriorated to a "feeder" discussion.
The original point was made in the first post yes, and I feel those of us who have posted here pretty much agree that making a mockery out of an animal's feeding response simply for the "snuff" factor is wrong.
All this debate on using feeders or not using feeders, natural or un-natural, moral or immoral, is just another "using feeders" post, of which there have been many before.
Some heated with folks getting nasty, some closed, etc.
What's the point now since the original has been made and the "supposed" general consensus is that it's wrong ? :) :)

i don`t know whether its just my age or i`m seeing things differently nowadays but there seems a sickness to my mind in todays hobby.
i cant believe how many people on this forum seem to delight in watching one fish eat another.
I`ve owned preds over the years and have fed them live fish when needs must but have always hated doing it.
I don`t want to be fed the spurrious argument that its replicating nature cos its not. prey animals have a chance to escape in the wild tipping one fish in with another in the confines of a tank is voyeuristic if it isn`t just a means to get a fish eating,
I find the lack of regard that some people here have for " prey animals " disturbing ,though i suspect many are young and haven`t yet developed the empathy factor that grownups develope.
Ive made mistakes and have marvelled at one fishes ability to swalow another but this deliberate destruction and in particular ill matched predator prey size is just sick in my mind,
Am i the only one here that thinks this! am i on the wrong site ?
i thought i was joining a forum that loved big fish not lets see fish suffering dot com .!
I`m 43 yo perhaps i`m just not down with the kids eh .or too old for these sorts of sites.

If I have what is being stated here, its the moral of feeding one fish to another as well as pitting one fish against another.
Personally, I find nothing wrong with feeding feeders fish to preditors. But this comes with a sense of ethics that comes to feeding such fish. The idea of feeding fish to others is part of the draw of owning a preditor fish. As was stated prior its part of the reason we like watching Discovery channel to see one animal take down another. The thing I would not agree with is feeding feeders (on purpose) that are too large for the preditor to eat in one bite. To have, for example, a snake head fish bite a feeder goldfish in half and have it swim around the tank for 1/2 hour because it was too large to eat is for sure wrong. Or to feed a fish that will be slowly consumed alive by having hundreds of little bites taken from the fish over the period of a few minutes is not right ether. Killings should be done as fast as the preditor can do so with the least amount of torcher to the pray.
With that said, I totally agree against the idea of pitting two fish of equal size. I do not agree with fish killing without the purpose of eating the fish but just a sport killing. We have seen to many spieces wasted such as buffalo shot just for the eating of the tounge. That was just a waste of life for no real good reason. I hope this makes sense of what I am trying to get across. People have and always will enjoy seeing things being eaten by larger preditors. If you want an example of past experinces just look at the gladitorial games by the Romans, or look at just about any movie put out today. Killing for sport is wrong but you can't stop people from enjoying things that have been going on for centurys.

i must be sick cause i would feed my oscar live fish all the time by hand i thought it was great and i now breed guppys to feed my angles fish eat fish thats y i have them

I guess ill just say I Love Watching a Feeder Killed, Its what they are bred for. The fish we keep probably would have been eaten in the wild, few fry live there. I realize its just not some peoples thing,But others really enjoy it. I guess what im saying is Dont Read What You Dont Like, and others who enjoy the topic can. The posts here are clearly labeled,I manage to read only what i want to and im not the sharpest tool in the shed LOL

WOW....no further comment on that one

This is quite a thread boys and girls. The topic didn't hit home with me until I saw that You Tube vid of the GT being torn apart by the piranha's...really pissed me off. As far as feeders I don't use them and have no need...However think about this...

I hunt and fish A LOT. Now how do you see using live bait for fishing? Wether its a worm, frog, or a small fish? I've caught MANY bass and trout using such things for bait. Seems like thats kinda in between...in that grey area between ok and not ok, but is overlooked

I agree the whole showing off, "torture" and suffering stuff is awful and unnecessary. No doubt about it. And one MUST handle themselves Ethically in such cases. I know this is a little off topic, but some people consider hunting and fishing cruel. Well to them I have to say that I don't hunt because I like to kill stuff. I hunt because it is the most sound, effective, scientifically proven, method of population control out there, and it puts food on my table... unfortunately PETA IS misinforming people in that regard but thats for another discussion....so don't get me started on them :irked: ... However I agree with then in some realms of animal cruelty (ie: Vick and dog fighting for example)

Bottom line Nature is a masterpiece, and its our responsibility to be respectful and Ethical. No more tasteless Vids PLEASE!

i`m not a greeny or animal hugging yoghurt knitter but i like to think i have some sort of regard for other living things .
there`s some fantastic discussions on this site.
but the `i love killing things ` i just don`t get.

i finally had to jump in ...that is my biggest problem too.. how people enjoy this ..very scary to me.. that they do not have empathy...towards other living things.. that they could literly enjoy watching something suffer.. and instigate the practice like it is something the rest of us should just accept as ho-hum.. i was always taught that if you have no feelings and regard for all the creatures in the world then you are probably a very cold unfeeling person about all humans as well..we cannot change that nature is nature and that the fittest survive but we certainly can feel sorry for things and people more unfortunate.. you can feed your fish feeders and you can eat your beef.. but when it comes to purposely causing another to suffer for your unatural enjoyment is to me a whole different issue..and definitly should seek help because this is not a healthy prospective to live by..
