Is there such a thing as the barred red devil?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
-more importantly, only breeding Lab x Lab and Cit x Cit regardless of collection points. I believe this was mis-typed? ( no offense, just trying to clarify)

I did not, I'm speaking strictly from past experiences when speaking of the Amphilophus genus with Jeff Rapps and Don Conkel

I was essentially trying to say exactly what Duanes posted above.

I figured as much, I just wanted to clarify for the OP :)
and I just read the articles RD posted... which seem more to be arguing about whether or not an A. Labiatus occurs naturally in Lago Yaxha, which it does not. To add to what Duanes stated, there are many manyyy Amphilophus species of the barred variant (like my F1 A. Citrinellus "Rio Tempisque"). So it is possible that OP received an Amph of the "Red Devil complex" (though I often see it referred to the "Midas Complex" more than the "RD complex")... but (after reading the links RD posted) I have to retract my previous statement about Rusty not mislabeling his own stock  something in that thread was very off lol

I have decided not to breed them with any of our current pure stock. The reason I serched so hard to find the Red Devils And Midas we already have was to have the pure strains. The last thing I want to do is create more Midevil type fish. What I had origanally wondered was if these fish got mislabeled by the seller.
I was thinking they may be the Midas not the Devils as labeled.

In my opinion it makes no sense to breed pure strain cichlids from different collection locations, even if they are all the same species, and are all F0, especially within the Amphilophus genus of Central America. That was my point. Good call, Bill.

I am becoming a real central nut and a purist at heart. It would be nice to see the Midevils gone but some things like that will likely never happen. When we started setting up our fish room neither my wife or I ever dreamed we would have 160 tanks running someday. Now it looks like we don't have eough setup.
I was just telling her we need some larger grow out tanks. We are always happy when we pickup fish like the ones in this thread so we will have more to offer people. It is our goal to supply retailers or become a retaler with a good name ourselves. By that I want be able to offer people the purest lines of fish we can not cross breeds. We are getting there and people here in Alberta know who we are. That is a real thrill to have people recomend others to our fish room.

I was wondering about Amphilophus sp. thick lips. I briefly saw a pic on The Cichlid Companion, but can't find much info. Is that a new species?

Not yet, but it could be, along with several other Amphilophus found in the various crater lakes.

Apparently the fish we got are from lake Nicaragua and are Amphilophus Labaitus. RD I had looked at that sticky a hundred times just figured it told how the Midevils came to be.
I have learned more off of this thread than I thought one could. Just shows my wife and I will need another 200 years in this hobby just so we can say we know something. Looks like I should try and contact Don Conkel and COA to see where there Midas came from.

I have frys from F1 Barred Midas and F1 ceamsicle. Should be interesting to what they end up looking like.
