Not all brown bullheads are blotched.

You can't identify them by color. Blacks can be yellow colored in some instances.

MinnowMagnet, it looks like a black bullhead to me. Black chin barbels, right? Wide pale line around the base of the caudal fin. Caudal fin appears slightly indented at the end, in the picture (though that could be position). Can you get a picture of the anal fin extended?

here you go, thats from when he was about 4-5"

The best way to differentiate between black and brown bullhead is to count the anal fin rays. Can you upload a bigger photo just of the anal fin?

edit:
I blew up that photo as well as I could, and it appears that that fish has around 20 or less anal rays. From Fishes of New York: Brown bullhead have [19] (note- this means uncommon outlier) 21 to 24 anal rays, while black bullhead have 17 to 21 anal rays. Also - just because your fish is brown in color overall does not negate it being a black bullhead. Black bullhead in general have a more even color, while browns tend to be blotchy. Based on the anal ray count, I would call this a black bullhead, and the overall color also supports that conclusion.

I'm counting no more than 20 anal fin rays, which makes me say black bullhead.

Definitely not a yellow.

Possibly a brown if I'm missing count of a ray due to the small pic or something.

Pic blown up by 200% to see better, plus black dots added to more easily count the rays.

I see 19. I may be missing one at the back of the fin near the tail due to poor visibility, but that still doesn't make it over 20.

so its a black then

Most likely. In rare instances browns can have as low as 20 anal fin rays from what I've read, but all other characteristics are pointing to black bullhead.
