Escondidos are very bright blue with large spotting similar to the chairel, but are much, much bluer. Also the Escos exhibit the finer defined squiggles on their face, quite like the Chairel females have, but fancier imo,

Escondido male( borrowd this pic of aquamojo, hope he doesnt mind)

Lahillas are on my wanted list. These appera more greener in colour and are distinguished by their spotted faces rather than squiggles or lines.

Again, your carpinte doesnt seem to be any of the above. I would just refer to him as an aquarium strain of Carpinte. Very nice specimen tho, hes got a lot of potential

Not at all. Here's a few more photos of the large male. Very high body with the very large tight pearl pattern.

Glad you didnt mind buddy ;^)

Cracking specimen there.

The fascial patterning on the esco's is beautiful.

The collection for H. carpintis "Escondito" is Laguna La Vega Escondida near the mouth of Panuco river.

The collection location for the H. carpintis "Chariel" is also near the mouth of the Panuco river.

According to Eric Hanneman (who knows something about Hericthys), they're the same fish:

"Emilio de laMadrid called the location Laguna de la Puerta. It was next to Laguna Chairel. I dont see it on Bob's map, so the name might have changed. Assume same location so yes they are escondido"

There's a thread about it on the ACA website (with a map)

interesting read, cheers for the link.
a lot of fishkeepers here in the UK considered them to be the same also.
When i spawned mine last year, nobody wanted any of the juves as i guess, escondidos were plentiful at the time, and they thought they were the same.
There are some distinct differences in the two races tho.( remarkably the facial markings ) Im interested to see what size and body shape mine attain once fully grown. My largest male is a touch over 8" TL atm.

No prob. I'm still getting the answers that I need from your conversations. I thought it was a Carpinte. I can't really get a good picture of it because it only wants to face the camera head-on. The pearls are a bright turqouise with a reddish-brown background closer to the head. In any case I'm happy with it. Now my wife says that I have to get her a REAL Texas! Thanks everyone for all your help.

Not to make this any longer but I will aggree with those that say Carpintis. But as far as varient/locale its a hit and miss. I believe later down the line as it grows it will better determined, but for now its all just a educated guess that later will be answered postively.

Even among fish in a given population (watershed) there can be a lot of variability. Maybe the differences are the differences in the actual fish that were collected and bred for captive generations vs. actual differences in populations...

The two locations (for "escondito" and "chareil") are close enough that a good flood would mix everyone up.

Anyone know where Lahillas is? In Zacatecas?

it is a lfs carpinte. Not Chariel, Boston, Escondido, nor Louisiana. Those names are places where the type of fish were from. Your's is from a fish store. Just bascially a mixture of anything carpinte as long as they are Carpinte and breed it to make your fish.
