it is a lfs carpinte. Not Chariel, Boston, Escondido, nor Louisiana. Those names are places where the type of fish were from. Your's is from a fish store. Just bascially a mixture of anything carpinte as long as they are Carpinte and breed it to make your fish.
OK. I see. I understand that it comes from a LFS, most fish do. I was wondering what or where this particular one could have derived from. It's not my intention to upset people with my questions or misnaming of the species. I'm just a bit confused with all the different names and conflicting statements of various sites and books.

he wasnt saying it to be mean he was just clarifying that its not a pure bred locale variant that can be easily identified as one variant or another, it is whats called a "petstore variant" where its just a mutt of whatever the big broker that mass breeds the fish decided to put together to supply the stores with just like the midas/red devils that the big pet stores sell they are pretty much never a pure breed of either but a mix between the two (and if your in florida you may even be able to catch your own texas cichlid from what iv read i think there are some wild populations in florida from where people released them though not sure where in florida)

I know just how confusing it can be mate. Ive been keeping central american cichlids for around 6-7 years and i get stumped from time to time. With species being collected from many new locations, its become a trend to quote collection points with fish, so as to identify the different races. This is becoming so confusing as it tends to imply that these are sperate species, which theyre not. Its nice to keep pure strains of species from specific geographical locations, and its good for these to be distributed throughout the hobby. But the differences are only slight, and afterall, these are all still Carpinte. I think we can look into these things far too much. You have a cracking fish there mate.

Original poster, where did you buy your fish?

I don't think anyone is criticizing the fish. It's a beauty.

The issue is when people attach a geographic varient to LFS or unknown location fish...and then distribute them or breed them with know varient fish...

This is a relatively new thing for new world fish...

Thanks, Jimmy. That clears things up for me. I'm happy with the fish regardless of its questionable name. It's a curious and colorful guy.

;) No worries buddy.

If it was bought at a local fish store I believe you have answered your own question. Enjoy your fish.
