Hi all... I was just wondering if I could get some critique on my tank setup for my GT. This was our old fancy goldfish tank, and they died (we cannot keep fancy goldfish alive for more than two years for anything), so we went with a one-fish tank -- the GT I posted yesterday. Now, he doesn't seem nervous, or anything, but I did buy him a flowerpot, and he hasn't gone in it all. Do they not need a lot of cavey-cover after they grow larger (he's six or seven inches). Maybe I should turn the flowerpot away from the front of the tank? Or does he need some other type of cave to feel comfortable? I'm not into changing substrate, but I do want to know if I should be putting in more flat rocks or something, and the fake tree can come out if necessary, though he seems to like it a lot more than the flowerpot. Also, since I'm posting, I'm feeding Hikari Cichlid Staple and Cichlid Gold. Is this varied enough, along with the occasional earthworm? Thanks for all advice.

Oh, don't worry. With my other fish, food never sits around long! I have some very hungry fish! Thanks for the input.

looks good...id give him atleast 1 spot so he can get out of sight.

just incase he gets scared.

So do you think I should turn the flowerpot around? I turned it to the front so that I could see him (kind of selfish, really!) but I can turn it to the side or the wall if necessary... thanks for your input!

I say leave the pot the way it is, add a rock or plant in front of the opening. so if he goes in you can at least see him and he'll still feel sheltered

Okay, I think I have a big flat rock out in the shed somewhere. That sounds like a good idea.

yea the pot is fine just add a plant in front of it .. add some dithers let him have some fun lol

Okay, so I'll add something to cover up part of the opening of the pot, like plants or a rock or both. As for dithers, this is strictly a one-fish tank! LOL as we've been upgrading, my husband has been trying to sell all of the small tanks. So, the only way I get to keep them is if I make them as low-maintenance as possible. :grinno:

Saums have never been bothered to use pots IME. I have always found driftwood that they can swim through and around to be better suited for them. I have also found the larger they get the more time they spend in the open. A black background in conjunction with an 18000k PowerGlo bulb will make his colors pop for sure.
