They work well, down side noisy (high water volume), takes up space and lots of evaporation. upside high gas exchange & BB.
Pumps are ok in tank, won't clog (you can pre-filter them if you like, but not necessary(onionfish aren't very messy except that once a year thing)).
Use the first unit as the pre-filter and if it clogs it's doing it's job properly, just clean it on a schedule so it doesn't clog completely.
