what I have done in the past if I want to start up a tank quick is to get some established bio media from lfs or if you have a tank already cycled or those bacterias in a bottle product (stress zyme or stability, both worked good for me in the past) and then drop in some fish fillet or raw shrimp.
established bio media contains beneficial bacterias already and it helps to seed your new bio media and the shrimp or fish fillet (just replace them every other day or so so they don't smell bad)will provide food source to those bacterias as they decompose. soon your'll have enough bacterias in the bio media, just check your parameters every few days.

I"ve gone this route with every tank since but the 55 was what started me up and i didn't know anyone here with a tank....didn't think of the fish store route though. It is much much faster.

lol. Stew, treasure chests are cool for most community tanks, i just think it looks odd when you have predators though. You will probably want to add a powerhead though as your fish will enjoy the currents.

Yeah and were all cool with our fake skull decorations :irked:

Most stores will do tests for free, trusting them though is hit and miss. I can't stand the employee at my lfs (shes a chichlid person and knows everything) so I get mine tested down by my moms house. Piranha are pretty tough fish and with the research youve done your pretty smart which will go a long way. Plus you were smart enough to come here first unlike me who waited 6 weeks and had lots of trial and error experience.

Biggest problem and easiest problem to fix with p's... keeping the water clean. If you don't have one a syphon will be your next big investment piece.

I have a syphon, a net, just about everything you'd need. I'm just at cycling now. But, other than taking the water to my LFS, is there test kits I can get? Cause it would be a lot easier for me.

Thanks,
Stew

you can get the API master test kit for freshwater, I think it has pretty much everything you need in the kit.

Hey I just picked up 6 black mollies from my LFS, I'm currently having them get used to the water, with them in the bag in the water, etc. But, my question is should I feed them right when I let them out?

Thanks,
Stew

don't have to feed them right away, they probably won't eat anyway.
just wait until tonight or tomorrow
