Is this a good setup for 3 red bellys?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great start. What's your local fish store charging for red bellies there? Were you debating between any other type of fish before you decided on piranhas?

My local fish store charges $9.99 per fish, and there around 2 inches in length. Also I just thought piranhas would be a cool fish, and I can't really think of any other fish. But, I kind of wish I could have a couple of different types of species, so I kinda want to try to put a pleco in with them, but I have heard stories where it worked out and others where it didn't so I have no idea.

So if anyone has any suggestions as to how to have 3 piranhas coexist with some other type of fish, let me know.

Last, if there is some other cool fish that is kind of like a RBP, fill me in, I would love to read about them. I just chose piranhas, because I knew about them and seems pretty cool.

Thanks,
Stew

Ohhhh, your guy's skulls are fake? I killed a baby alligator when i could just by a fake one? Oh God, the horror, there was blood everywhere! The worse was scooping out the eyes

lol hey I like my fake alligator skull, least till l redo my tank an start my next one.

2" should be fine for a while, at least a year.

I kept my 3 RBP's in a 55 for about 6 months before I thought they seemed a little uncomfortable. I upgraded to an 85 and at 8" they seem pretty happy.

It will be easy to tell but you will have to upgrade as they grow. Sounds like a good start though. From your research you should know how skittish they will be when you first get them but they are very cool fish to own and IMHO very easy to take care of.

Alot of people in here keep other type of fish as well but it's all in personal preference.

Tankmates, pure hit and miss. I'd atleast toss a pleco in there when you start the tank and just experiment with cheap fish also

I keep a spotted raph catfish and snails with my gold p. No problems with it after a month. The armor on the cat is like a rock. You wont see it too often but it will keep your tank clean as p's are messy eaters. The snails are too slow for the P to take any intrest in it and they will help with algae. Another piece of advice that I can give you from experience: DO NOT wait too long to upgrade the tank size. RBP's are fast and skittish. At the right size they can blow right through the glass of a 55g. A 75gal + tank has a thicker glass. Great looking tank though and it will last you for quite a while. You are on the right track for sure. Check out the nutrition sticky in this forum. Very informative. Keep us updated and we LOVE pics!

i keep guppies in with my p's. they get eaten here and there, but breed faster than they dissapear. they also eat little particles of food that the p's toss around.

are you really sure you want p's? it kinda sounds like you want more that one type of fish

Just got my 3 p's today! :D There are really shy, they hide most the time, but I left my mollies in there and they ate one almost whole and killed two others by just biting them. So I only have 3 mollies left. Also, about 2 weeks ago I got rid of the live plants because it looked like they were dying and they were very messy and clogged my filter a little bit, sometimes. But, when I got home today I noticed 2 snails in my tank. So, I read a little and now I figure there was eggs on my plants. So, my question is, should I get rid of them? Or keep em' and if I notice a lot of them I'll get rid of them.

Thanks,

Stew

PS: I'll post some pics in a bit

keep them. They can help with clean up. If you notice a bloom though then there's an overabundance of a food
