Is this a good setup for a Midevil?

So long story short, sold off my green terror and clown loaches, dumped fancy plecos in a garden pond and took out all the java ferns.

Hit reset on the tank and after an hour or so, ended up with this. A future home for a 4" Midevil.

Tanks is 50x20x20 and filtration is split into three. A hydor 450 loaded for bio, an aquaclear 70 loaded with chem and an internal filter for mech. Lights are two 54w tubes @ 12,000K.

I plan to use air pump hose to make out a small space on top for floating plants to hang out. Most likely the red rooters.

So...TLDR: Do i need to change anything? Add a convict? Flowerpot?

Thanks :)

great size tank for a midevil imo. and i think your setup is fine too. he'll love your wood. though for some reason my midevil loves to tangle himself in a big fake plant i have so you could fiddle with that if you wanted.

you could try a con but i think one of the fish would end up dead sooner than later.

Thanks. Shall skip the convict. I got him/her today. Looked bigger at the LFS :) Shall post a pic/vid tomorrow. He is roaming around the tank happily enough.

Would java ferns work or would the RD just shred them up? Shall look for a nice fake plant otherwise to get some greenery in there.

From an overstocked multi species tank to a solo wet pet tank, it takes getting used to i guess. Can't wait for the little fellow to grow up.

Plan to replace one of the 12k t5 with a a pink t5. the pink and 12k white should merge nicely for the RD i reckon.

Tank looks really good. 50"x20"x20"? odd size, should work fine for a devil though. I agree the convict might be toast. You could give it a shot though. Or some non-cichlid dithers like giant danios. Might eventually get eaten but you could try.

Looks to be an 85 -90 gallon tank, so the way I judge size (a "minimum" of 10 gallons per inch of adult species of cichlid), a properly kept Amphilopins will reach 12-14", so that size tank is, at least 35 to 55 gallons too small for the size a midevil will eventually grow. I would never keep that size cichlid in a tank less than 72" in length.
In that size tank, the water will become heavily saturated with nitrate very quickly, (unless you do large every other day water changes), and high nitrate leads to HLLE, and other chronic maladies, and/or if you add any other fish, the footprint will be too small to provide sufficient territory to keep aggression down.
Probably the right size tank for just a few convicts.

Odd size indeed. Had it made to fill a recess in the walls between two rooms in my flat. Could have gone taller but then i would have had to redo the switchboard behind the tank.

Had to fight with the home minister to get that space. She wanted to set up her ironing zone there :p

Fish shall stay solo. Thanks :)

Ouch. And here i was thinking a 90G would be ok for the Midevil :(

I do a 60% water change ever sunday without fail. Can add one more Aquaclear if required. And heck if the fish really has no business being in that tank, there is always a 6x2x2 tank which used to house my Banjar red aro over at my Grandparent's place [10mins away from where i live] or a 10x5x4 garden pond :p

Options are endless :)

The devil is all of 3-4" now. Shall keep an eye out on the nitrate levels as it grows.

And MFK levels never ceases to amaze me. Out here in my part of the world, this would qualify as a big tank :P And here you are saying it's ok for a few convicts! :D JK.

The 6 X 2 X 2, is what consider a nice size tank for a few midlevels.
And your other tank is considered a fairly large tank here too, but I believe too many people will settle for a very confined space, not really considering what the fish actually needs to live comfortably, its just because they want them.
Nitrate is one of the products of filtration, so although adding more is always better, its not the answer to chronic nitrate toxicity.
I know what you mean about the home minister, I have a X who didn't appreciate my aquatic obsession.
Your OP tank would be great some a shoal of your native cichlid species Etroplus canarensus (some of my favorite) or E maculatus).

I also like and have kept E suatensus, but those only in minimum 6ft tanks because of their dinner plate size. I fed them them some of the weeds from my garden

Shall wait a while for the tiny fellow to grow up before relocating him to the bigger tanks. He seems so tiny in this tank all by himself. Can't wait for him to grow up.

Was thinking of tying down the ferns onto the driftwood at the top to get some shade going on.

Also saw a spotted raphael catfish at the LFS yesterday. Been reading that they can be a good tankmate for the RD. Yes? It is larger than the RD i have.
