Is this a good setup for a Midevil?

Shall wait a while for the tiny fellow to grow up before relocating him to the bigger tanks. He seems so tiny in this tank all by himself. Can't wait for him to grow up.

Was thinking of tying down the ferns onto the driftwood at the top to get some shade going on.

Also saw a spotted raphael catfish at the LFS yesterday. Been reading that they can be a good tankmate for the RD. Yes? It is larger than the RD i have.

i keep a raphael with my red devil. i say yes. the devil will catch up to him quickly.

Your tank looks great! I love the Hardscape. He will be fine in that for a good while. Adding some Giant Danios will add another Dynamic that might be fun to watch.

The 6 X 2 X 2, is what consider a nice size tank for a few midlevels.
"A few" midevils in a 180g is going to cause the same nitrates as 1 in a 90g no?

Op, if it's a female rd she will be fine forever in that tank imo, most store bought fish end up much worse. If it's a boy I agree in 2-3 years he may start looking cramped and think the 180g would be a great step up for him.
My 300g has the equivalent body mass in fish of about 6 fully grown midevil males (if not more) and I control my nitrates with spares feeding and 1 80% WC per week. My tap water is 30ppm and I get a reading of 50ppm at the end of the week.
I understand completely where duanes is coming from tho bigger is always better as is less nitrates. Most accept that 4* length and 1.5* width of the fish is a bare minimum.
You will get lots of various opinions on here and alot of very conservative opinions depending on what side of the bed people climbed out of.
@eh for example has had his midevil in a 75g for a few years now and although not ideal he seems to be doing pretty well. I bet all his siblings have had tragic lives in 3ft tanks with no water changes. That little devil should thank his lucky stars he ended up in an mfk'ers tank:)

Thanks :)

Surprisingly haven't even see Giant Danios over here in ages. Weird considering they are supposed to be Indian. Shall keep an eye out.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Shall start work on setting up the 180 in a couple of years time then. In the meantime, good food, good filtration with weekly water changes.

Please bear in mind, that the fellow is tiny now. He is lost in the tank. Have not really got a good pic of him yet. Got just the one.

So i added a few emperor tetras and red phantom tetras along with a couple of talking catfishes.

Instant change in the RD. He is coming out of his cave more often. Curiosity gets the better of him and he keeps going around better now.

Added a few floating plants on top coralled in a by an airline tube.

Hope the RD settles in better now :)

yeah i usually add feeders when i switch my devil to a different tank, which has happened a lot in his life because hes so violent. seems to help him snap out of the new tank shock. those are nice tetras to be using. like stanz said they will be hunted down sooner than later.

i havent had any successful dithers for my rd yet. he can pick off giant danios easily which are one of the more elusive fish out there. the talking catfish should work well though. heres an older pic of my rd foraging with his buddy.

Those tetras probably won't last long.

I am aware of that. When the home minister throws an ultimatum that if the fish does not come out of it's cave, it goes into the pond, it is time for drastic measures! Ergo the temporary dithers [god bless their sacrificial souls] and the floating plants.

Planning to tie a few java ferns at the top to provide some additional shade.

Would a pot help or would the stone cave suffice?

Nice fish and good to see him roaming around with the cat. Hope to see mine do that soon.

The first RD i had was way back in 2003 and that was at 8" when i got him. Raging hormones or what not, the dude was a tank buster. I had him for 5yrs before a power failure took his life away...
