Ah I just love when the poster admits that he/she is overstocked and is working to correct the issue, yet replies keep coming in telling him/her to cut down on their stocking levels. :screwy:

...or how it's identified and still folks feel a need to continue to confirm what the other nine people confirmed. LOL

For what it's worth, I was collecting with a couple guys who own a fish farm in Florida. Somehow the conversation got around to the Red Terror. He was referring back to the Mayan Cichlid. Apparently a good many of the Fish Farmers...guys who sell to the big box and other pet stores...refer to the fish in this post (by the way, your fish is a Uropthalmus :D) as the Red Terror. So it's easy to see how the "trickle down" can occur to the people buying the fish.

For what its worth, I have cut down on the stock in the tank since originally posting this. I also managed to sell some Angels that I had in a different tank.

14 fish are now in new homes, including the Mayan. His new owner picked him up last night and is very happy with him.

You moved them out pretty fast. I'm glad that you were able to clear out the stock. I remember you saying that you were just waiting to sell them to the right people. It can be hard to sell fish that you really want. It's a lot easier to lose the ones you don't want.

I got really lucky with craigslist this weekend. Sometimes I post stuff there and never hear back, but this time I was contacted right away by people who actually:
1) knew how to communicate like normal humans
2) followed through and actually showed up- with money too!
3) weren't total freakshows or examples of what happens when you get a few extra chromosomes.

Although Mayans can be aggressive as well they started being called RT's due to their similarity to Festae and the relative ease in acquiring them and passing them off as Festae.
IMHO, neither sould be called RT, but Festae or Mayan, thereby eliminating much of the confusion in the hobby.
As 1-2" juvies Mayans are almost identical to festae. Almost!
And as 4-6" adolescents they can somewhat mimick young female festae in breeding dress.
But the close similarities all but disappear from about 6-7" on into maturity. Male Festae will lose any barring unless stressed or in spawning dress. And will carry a typical green or golden yellow base with or without spangling depending on genetics.
Female Festae will intensify in red and/or red/orange dress with bold black barring and dorsal which can change to irredescent blue with mood.
Mayans/Urophthalmus keep the same chalky reddish/green base with dark barring. And both sexes remain the same color.

funny thing about this post is the guy said does he have a red terror and all i see is all this crap about its not a festae in wash dc mayans were red terrors long before festaes ever made it to town. the only true difference ive seen from owning raising and breeding both cichlids is the festae have a much more beautiful breeding color beyond that not much difference. most of the bs is started by people who bring in the fish who need a gimmic to sell fish for crazy prices. you have a very nice fish good luck with it
