Is this fin curl?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
very nice rays!!! i keep my temp at 80.

ur rays might be going to the top from lack of oxygen because of the high temp.

Are they trying to jump out or just going up the side and back down again just so thier nose comes out of the water? Do you try adjusting your ph or do you just use tap water and conditon it? How often do you do water changes and what percent of your tank? how big is your tank? Sorry for all the questions just trying to understand everything to help out best

In my eyes, the male pearl tries to jump out of water.
He does that like 2 times every hour but everytime he does , it goes for 10-15 secs and making a loud splashing noise. I bet he's goin all out on it.
My tap water pH is 7.8 , my R O filter's output is 5.8 , so I'm tryin to balance it by mixing them both.
Water change is 2 times daily, maybe about 20% each.
I dont have a sump filter, mine is just a mediocre on top of the tank filter.
I suck out all their waste with a hose.
My tank is 4 ft long, and 1.5 ft width and height.
I know its a very small one, but bigger one is on the way :)
Any input is GREATLY appreciated mate, thanks

Drop the RO, use straight tap, thats most likly the problem, you can do less waterchanges too .... one a day is perfectly fine... and look for some more filtration pretty soon

I would add lots of aeration, knock the temp down a bit, divide the new rays till they are eating aggressively, and slowly convert over to straight tap water, I may be wrong but no buffering capability in the RO water may be allowing PH to swing from the time it's added to the next time it's changed... Might be allright in a large amount of water, but in a small amount with heavy load I would think PH might be bouncing around. And LOTS more filtration.

Absolutly beautiful rays....... And welcome.

But that's just me........

Okay great you have some easy corrections to make a good home. Just use conditioned tap water and do not mix. Rays will thrive in 7.8ph no problem. Do 30% water changes every day depending how big your motoros are. If they are still small do water changes every second day. When a ray is splashing on top like that it is usually trying to scratch itself or another possibility is ther may be a small electrical current in the tank. I'm guessing you problems are just because your water is too hot and yor ph fluctuates. Have you checked your water parameters? Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate
How much biomedia does your filter hold?

How do you condition tap water?
Do I buy some water treatments like blackwater or anything?
Or do I just age them in another tank for a day or two?
I havent check those parameter yet, I'll go buy some test packs soon.
There is no biomedia at all in my filter..
The filter only circulates the water and I remove their faeces with a hose.
I thought at first that regular water changes everyday should take care of the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate so I didnt buy/build any big filters.
I'm building another tank now with a big sump filter so this one should be temporary for another week.

I bet the low oxygen by the sound of what your filter is like is the cause for the ray to go to the top of the water.

just buy some clorine remover and dose it as you do the water change.... no ill effects what so ever... rays are pretty easy to keep just make sure you have the proper filtration and clean water
