Is this good lighting for my WC devil

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I suggest that you do some reading on cyanobacteria, it's not algae, it's a bacteria strain that can actually thrive even under very low nitrate and lighting conditions.

Check my lighting thread under setup and filtration. Buildmyled.con made a specific spectrum for my devil. Look at the before and after. The fluval led sux dont waste your money.

Please read the entire post before starting treatment

Erythromycin is effective in eliminating Cyanobacteria, if you choose to use it remove any carbon from the filter first. Start by doing a large 75% water change while vacuuming out all the Cyanobacteria you can physically remove. Dose the Erythromycin as per instructions on the package and treat for about 5 days even if appears to be gone. The smallest amount left behind will cause a regrowth of a possible antibiotic resistant strain. After treatment is complete monitor your water parameters as the tank could go through a cycle. If you have filter media from another tank you could use it to inoculate your tank with BB and eliminate or reduce the re-cycling. The Erythromycin while eliminating the Cyano from your system it will not eliminate the root cause of the problem i.e. why it started to begin with.

Reduce the duration of your lighting period to a maximum of 8 hours a day. Keep up with weekly 50% or more water changes and substrate vacuuming. Do not over feed and keep up with a good filter maintenance schedule. I think you might want to rethink your lighting too with reduction in intensity and the spectrum may need to be adjusted.

As a final thought you could look into the thread about the use of probiotics http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?536531-The-Use-of-Probiotics-in-Aquaculture. I have never tried this with regards to the elimination of Cyanobacteria but it would be an interesting experiment and if successful would be a ground breaking revelation in the area of competitive exclusion in regards to the use of probiotics. It wouldn’t hurt to try it first before going to the Erythromycin. It might be the treatment of the future if successful and defiantly a pioneering breakthrough in this area.

The cyano isn't directly hamful per se but it's a sign somthing is wrong which needs to be addressed. My post gave you clear direction. I would strongly you get some Rid-X and try it.
