Is this ich?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I did loose one glass catfish. It wasn’t the catfish that I believe MAY have ich spots, he was just dead on the ground. I did scoop it out as soon as I seen it. The questionable catfish is hanging out by itself in a cave. The other 4 are congregated together. The catfish did appear to be excited when I dropped frozen brine shrimp in. The rope is still up and down the glass… altho she did eat and is not nearly as frantic as she was. I tested water parameters again today because I didn’t like yesterday’s readings. It appears everything is normal. ph 7.4-7.6, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 5. Hopefully, 8 days of treatment was enough to take care of the ich problem. Will continue to monitor the one catfish, but again not even sure it’s ich. I have tried to get pics but the tiny lil stuff I’m seeing doesn’t show up in pics. I guess I am just concerned because he’s the only catfish that is all by himself… and he’s hiding in the cave. No other fish have any signs of distress or ich.

Can you take some pics of the one glass cat?
When buying schooling fish, it’s not unlikely to lose a few on the way, but it is important to know if there isn’t anything major going on.

I decided to move the one questionable catfish to my 5 gallon african dwarf frog tank. It is the only other tank I own. This may have been a not so smart move, but my thinking was if it is ich, frogs don’t get ich and if and when they drop off I didn’t want another major outbreak in my 75 gallon , especially since the treatment stressed my rope out so much. image.jpg

On the fins there are some spots - is that particles in the water or attached to the fin?
Looks like damage, I see one mark that could resemble ich.

Those are on the fins. I also thought it may have been fin damage myself. But again I wasn’t completely sure either because it did seem like one or two resembled ich. I am glad you responded, because I am just not sure and having other opinions greatly helps. None of the other fish have anything like this. I’ve been watching them like hawk ? Do you think me moving this one fish will help? Or did I just sentence my AFDs to death?

Frogs will be fine, just don’t leave the fish in there too long.
Sounds like this one is at the bottom of the hierarchy, and is beat up. Hence the fin damage. It will heal. The one white spot in the back, does it look like a grain of salt attached or just a mark on the fin? That would tell if it’s ich or not.
If not ich, just fatten him up and release back with the school!

I have to be the worst fish keeper ever! I did a w/c in my smaller tank yesterday, as I do every Monday. I noticed the smaller of my two ADFs was floating at the top of the tank. When i say floating I mean even the hob was pushing him around and he didn’t care. I looked it up, it says that’s normal. Then this morning I went to feed and he was on the bottom on his back. I thought o no he’s dead! I grabbed the net and went to get him out, and he’s still alive. I uprighted him, and left him alone. A few minutes later he was on his back again. I took the net scooped him out, not a single movement wrapped him in paper towel and threw him in trash. I didn’t want to flush in case it’s that one chytrid disease, I wouldn’t want to infect wild populations. Tried getting a look at glass catfish in there. But right now he is behind the filter intake, so can’t really see him right now. Other fish tank seems fine. Rope is still eating if I hand feed her on the floating plants, but she is still up and down the glass. I will be testing water today in lil tank. I usually wait one day after w/c to do a water test. I’m pretty sure they will be normal readings.

May be coincidence. If you bought the frog from a petsmart, they are notoriously unhealthy. I’ve never had one last more than a few months.
