Are you talking about hawilipino's suggestion about fin rot? If you are, what does fin rot have to do with size? Any tankmates in the tank? If there are no tankmates, its probably fin rot or your water quality. Frequent water changes should solve your problem.

Thats not fin rot, looks like an aro that is being harassed or chased by another fish. One other possibility is that it is biting its own tail.
