Is this tank overstocked

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For the redtail catfish, arowana, and other monster fish, if price for a monster tank is an issue, you can buy one of those large stock tanks for a fraction of the price and use that temporarily. I’ve seen 300 gallon stock tanks for around $100 dollars in my area and on Craigslist. I also would not recommend getting the 75 gallon. Arowana grow very quick and will outgrow the tank in a few months (as other members have noted). If I were you I’d save money on a tank at least 200-300 if you want to keep the arowana and redtail catfish longterm. Even that is not optimal as your maintenance would have to be much more frequent and possibly aggression between fish due to territory. Again good luck! I remember when I was your age and wanted arowanas, p bass, and other monster fish. Although you seem confident that you will have the opportunity to upgrade accordingly, as a kid I had trouble getting my parents to agree on such large aquariums, especially the hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Hopefully it all works out!

Also, a 29 gallon is sufficient for those angelfish and community fish. I have kept 6-10 juvenile angelfish in a 29 gallon with no problem. However, they do get pretty large as my adult male is around 5-6 inch in height and especially if you have multiple (I think you have 1?) they will pair off and be aggressive towards each other. I also agree with Nikki about the python, literal life saver and saves a lot of time. Since I connect my python into the basement I don’t waste additional water as the pressure automatically starts the siphon. Also only around $30 so I recommend investing in that then trying to get the 75 gallon.
i live in Ohio it’s currently really hot, you walk outside and 5 seconds later you got a bucket full of sweat but at night and winter it gets really cold, if I get a stock tank how would I make it work with the cold months also I found one 30 minutes away for 200$ But I’ll also need filtration also completely unrelated, ikbfiduing and there a snake I don’t know what kind but I’m really bored fishing I’ve only got one crappie and a 17 inch channel cat (dinner) but I really really wanna catch it it’s all black ( I think, I’m actually legally blind so can’t really tell but definitely has dark colors) and again I really wanna catch it and I have caught snakes before I’m really good at it actually and I want to name it Craig and safely releasing

You can find stock tanks at tractor supply and stores like Home Depot. Filtration, I would just buy a fx6 or something similar to that caliber. Maybe a pond filter would work as well. As Kelly said ideally you would want to keep it at home as heating during winter and cold days will cost quite a bit. If you don’t have space, I honestly recommend rehoming the “monster fish” and keep something that is more realistic in your situation. I know it’s tough to give up a fish you love, but it’s better if you can provide it with a better home than have it die or grow stunted due to bad conditions. A rtc hybrid catfish is not your every day fish and is usually not even recommended for the home aquaria so maybe substitute for a smaller growing catfish? Again that’s worst case scenario if you can’t find somewhere to keep a stock tank. You can also try getting a greenhouse and putting the tank outdoors. I have a greenhouse for my garden and the temp there fluctuate much less and are far higher than outdoors, but depending on your area, hot summers may be too hot. Again just trying to help with your situation!

How much would a greenhouse cost, my grandma has a bunch of plants in their house and has too many plants for her house, my papaw owns his own business and makes a load of money in a matter of hours, my papaw, me, my dad, and a family friend are all good at building things and enjoy it so maybe just maybe I could try to convince my mama and papaw to build a greenhouse at their house and in addition we could add my redtail tiger shovel nose

I agree with this comment.

I even offer a suitable alternative catfish. If you like the spots of the rtcxtsn then a pictus catfish might tickle your fancy. They are a very nicesilver color withblack dots all over their fins and body and they only reach about 6 inches or so. Very manageable size wise.

Picture catfish are a small catfish I like but again that’s worse case scenario

They are smaller for sure, 6 inches isn’t exactly a tiny fish. I wouldn’t do any smaller than a 40g breeder for one pictus. They need space to swim. When I say 40g for one pictus I mean in regards to swimming space, you could add a bunch more fish with the pictus.

the ones you see in store are usually 1/3rd of the size they will be as an adult. And they get a good size girth on them when fed well.

pictus are also very active catfish
