Of course, not every one in rural Northern California is a redneck or a grower. Some of us just like country living. Here are some of the differences between living in SoCal versus NorCal. In NorCal, it seems that every third vehicle is a pick up truck. When a tree goes down, someone has a chainsaw and can usually open up at least one lane for traffic to go through before the official road people get to the scene. This was on my way to work one morning.

Of course, our chainsaws are not only for firewood, but to cut down pesky trees in our own yard.

When you are driving, you never know when you might come across a herd of Roosevelt elk grazing or crossing the road in front of you.

You don't leave garbage outside, or bears may scatter the garbage all over during the night. If you see the neighbor's black shepherd walking down your driveway, do a double take, because it is probably a bear and not a dog, especially if the neighbor doesn't have a shepherd.

At night we love the sound of the river below us.

We have to drive through redwood groves to get to town

We do not have the fabulous malls that SoCal has. Instead of walking through malls, my fingers walk across my keyboard. I have made major purchases online...my fish tanks...most recently, a grand piano from Dayton, Ohio. I don't need malls to spend money :) One of the biggest differences between SoCal and NorCal is that you cannot be in a hurry to get any where, because there is nothing close by, and it takes time to get any where. There are only three flights in and out of here each day. NorCal is not comprised of dog eat dog, climb to the top no matter who you trample on kind of people. I think there are more laid back, take time to smell the roses kind of people in NorCal than in SoCal. I think there is generally a different mind set.

wow Pacu Mom! Just hearing your attitude and seeing those redwood pics makes me want to drop everything and move there.sounds like paradise fro sure.

It's definitely not for every one. We're here by choice. If the hustle and bustle of big city living appeals to you, you would hate this place. I think, though, there are more people wanting to live here than there are people here wishing for the big city life. There is a funny aspect to my living here, though. When we go to Hawaii, I love the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. By the time vacation is over, I am happy to crawl back into my rural cubbyhole.

last time I was in Waikiki I was arrested for buying alcohol w/a fake i.d. Still had a great time,it was a high school graduation present and by coincidence-that was the 'in' place for all the cali girls to go for grad.within 5 min of checking in to our hotel we had 12 cali girls in our room.good times, but i don't see anything appealing about the big cities and the 'rat race'.I was raised in a small town in Miss just below the state line and not too far from Memphis. There is always some crimes going on in the city. Most in the country don't even lock their doors. L.A. is maybe the craziest city in the world so I can see why people would be so different there. Most of those valley girls we met had serious tudes.they literally thought l.a. started every trend in the world.kinda funny or a word that sounds like that.
