I've noticed that Walmart tanks are bright, clean, full of fish for sale and that the turnover of their stock is very high. The staff know very little.
I imagine the vast majority of fish they sell end up (dead or alive) in the toilet. I'll bet most of their customers eventually get discouraged and abandon the hobby entirely.

My wal mart is great!! They stock and care for there fish every week. This week they had severums, oscars, firemouths, eels, and convicts. the owner orders the fish and cares for them. He is the one who does w/c and feedings.

Is the "owner" of your Wal-Mart the one who advised you that this tank set-up is a good idea?
25g: 1 Albino Oscar, 2 Angelfish, 1 silverdollar, 1 tinfoil barb, , 2 sydontis eurptis catfish, 1 four lined catfish, 1 pictus catfish, and 1 pleco

Doesn't that both make him 1) a bad judge of whether his Wal-Mart is a responsible retailer of live animals and 2) a good example of the advice that his Wal-Mart and/or his dad are doling out?

So far over 90% of respondents whose local Wal-Mart carries fish feel that their Wal-Mart is failing to demonstrating responsible practices as a vendor of live animals...

Please don't forget to name the stores where you've observed responsible and, uh, less than responsible practices.

My local Wal-Mart is in Germantown, MD...and it was ick-city when I checked it out a couple of months ago (don't worry, I didn't actually BUY anything there!)...

I was disgusted when i saw the condition of these fish. Every greenspot and figure eight puffer was infected with ich half were dead. All the tanks a murky orange color from to much flake. the pumps were shooting air, half werent even on. and every single living fish was gasping at surface for air. Having worked for the best fish store in atlanta i know proper care and this was cruel.

The one in Mansfield, Texas isn't terrible. The bettas in cups still are a bit of a problem, but I rarely see dead fish in the tank. They still sell way too many future monsters though, but Pacus, Oscars, and other fish of that nature are cheap due to them breeding so easily.
