It seems that istlanum are becoming less available. I've said once or twice that they are available but since then I'm thinking I was WRONG.

It seems most folks that have istlanum have a male, and some have a female. I have an 8 inch male that I don't want to part with. Somehow we need to get some of these fish together and get some fry. The females are always in perile during breeding and raising young, so I think we need to get some ideas or techniques out there to help ensure breeding success without having another female istlanum killed.

So who has istlanum, what sex is it, and would you sell it?

Also, those of you with good breeding (fish) experience please give some ideas on how to make sure we get fry without a chewed up female. A guy in NC that had a pair used a divider successfully for a long time, before the male broke through and killed the female.

Make the divider super stong and syphon the fry out on the first day of free swimming so the parents dont eat them and the parents can start preparing for the next spawn.

I would not recommend this...I have had NO success pulling fry too soon! They parish ....Let the parents swim with them for at LEAST a week, if not two...Good luck guys.

I know of two people here in So. Cal with Istlanums........ Ruck Fules being one that I will mention.

Got to disagree, i always pull the fry out on the 1st day of free swimming, maily because they are usually in a community tank and i have loaches and catfish. Also the pair are put under alot of stress looking after them.
i have had great success upto now:)
i had a pair of sajica and they bred for the first time i pulled all out(36) on the first day and raised all to 1.5" and sold them, all 36:naughty:, while when i left them in the broad size kept getting smaller while the fry was with them.

Its upto you tho, you can try both and see which comes out with the most fry success rate.

LOL. He has already asked me about that. I was hoping someone would ship me a female. Gotta be someone closer to him with a male. My male is 8 inches, and I hate to ship a fish like him coast to coast. Tough thing to do, but hell I'm thinking about it. I know a guy in TX with a male.

i know of several people with them.
two in socal, and i think two in texas. i need to get in touch with the lone star fellas and see what's going on. i hope they are reading this thread and respond.

1fatdovii has two males and a female. He's waiting to get a pair and hopefully after he gets a pair would consider loaning or better yet selj me the extra pair. My female is good to go and is 5 1/2 inches now.

darthodo, ready to ship your male :D

Nah. I think someone closer to you should hook you up. Maybe I'll see some at ACA next weekend.
