well i've got a 6" Silver arow 'growing-out' in a 4x2x2 ready for a 6x2x2 9An dthen bigger) It can't go in the 6 foot as it just wouldn't get any food. As the other fish are too fast. This is a good growout, the smae applies to my Datnoids 6 of them are no bigger than 1.5" These are with my arow these would become food in any other tank.

I guess a better comparison would be to have the small closet as my 18 month old's play room. Then let her have the bedroom to play in when she gets older.

I just still can not see why a 1" fish that can grow to 24" for example needs to be in a 4ft long tank to start with, or why a person needs to purchase a large tank to just sit around and collect dust as that 1" fish grows.

You can not see it because you are a responsible fish keeper, I wish more were like you. I used to work in a LFS many many moons ago. I've heard and seen the horror stories. Fish keepers like yourself are rare when you sample all of the fish keepers in the country. Shoot, 1% may even be too high of a number. Now if you were to sample the members of just MFK the number would be a lot higher than 1%, just signing up to a website dedicated to the hobby shows you are more responsible than the average fish keeper.

Unless I know your situation first hand I am 100% against "grow out" tanks. Just my opinion from my experience working in a pet store.

Have you got any fish? As your 300gal is empty or are you growing some out. LOL

Nope, no fish yet.

Still finishing up the house. Hopefully this Winter I will get it running with two 1" Oscars swimming in it.

And a couple of others yet to be determined. Tig?

that is why I joined this forum. I talked a lot on another one but got so sick of the "HELP! MY FISH ARE SICK!" and the "oh I cant afford a $30 test kit until I get paid" The constant "I cant afford it" on small crap. Couldnt afford medications for a week for illnesses until they got paid. Antibiotics for small fish tanks is chump change!!! Some said they couldnt even run out and get salt to treat ich. It is just horrible.

That is very limited here, because this is serious fish keeping. lol

Oh and a lot of people in general lack compassion for animals and a lot less have it for fish. They are a display and the health and wellbeing are last on the agenda.

Looking in my tanks I see dogs with fins LOL I love them just as I do my dog. Since I love and care I can see their personalities and the quirky things they do that make me smile and laugh because I take the time.

Sad fish are not watched out for like dogs and cats by animal abuse programs. I have never seen fish at a humane society or rescue center. They just do not compare and that is sad.

I work in a petstore right now. Last night a family bought a 7.5 tank, and wanted to purchase an angel fish and jack dempsey chiclid.

They didn't want to get a heater. I didn't sell them the fish. I told them that those fish could not live in there that they would outgrow that tank in no time, not to mention the JD would probably kill the angel in that small space.

They didn't even care. They still wanted the fish, and said it didn't matter they just wanted something pretty to put in the little girls room.
I flat out had to tell them they literally were not allowed to buy the fish unless they were going to buy the necessary space for them.

It was positively annoying to see just the lack of caring comming from them.

I can understand when people don't relate fish to say - the same companionship as other pets, that they are despensible, pretty little swimming ornaments basically - that they have no personality and aren't really "pets".

Unfortunately thats just driven by not having the correct knowledge. I know each of my fish has a distinct personality - whether its based on instinct or what, its there. My Geophageus watches tv with me and my gf, swims to the corner of the tank to watch us when we're on the couch and stares non stop at the tv. Funny fish.

This post isn't a bash on true grow out tanks... they DEFINITELY have their place.

This post isn't about the people who go to the petstore and buy an oscar for a 20 gallon tank. those people don't know enough or don't care at all, they don't post on forums... they just aren't true fish keepers.


This post IS about some people on this site who love monster fish but can't house a monster fish. The people who know if they posted they had a monster fish in a 50 gallon tank that they would be ridiculed, so they just add the word "grow out" to 50 gallons and its a-ok now.

These people want to be able to be in the "I keep huge fish club" on here but... they just can't. They don't have the resources or space or whatever. And instead of accepting that fact and moving on to fish that can fit in their tanks and that have monster personalities instead of monster size... they just get a baby monster, run to post it in their sig (with the word "grow out" of course) and run to post it in the pictures section.

oh and what happens when the fish gets too big? oh its easy... take it back to the petstore and get another baby monster fish and just say you were "bored" with it.

I grew out from a 10gal to a 55 to a 75 to a 125 now its a 270 and I just bought a 220 last week. Im glad I didnt get flamed when I had the 10gal. Maybe sometimes people do mean what they say.....

Not only that but there's ethics involved and you can't put different people together and make them have the same ethics. As long as people have something to do with the fish later I dont care. Is growing a fish out and then killing/eating it wrong? B/C I remember oddball had some tarpon he talked about bar-b-que'ing when they got too big(real big) and you should know that alot of your favorite moster fish are raised for food anyways only to be killed when they get a certain size.

Remember there are those driven people who have "grow-out" tanks and will go on to get 300g's, 500g's and even 1000g's.. You can't judge everyone the same.
