Came downstairs this afternoon to majority of my fish floating or dead at the bottom :cry::cry::cry::cry: apparently my filter got clogged and so the water wasn't circulating and the tank must have become close to anoxic  I was messing around with the wood in the tank yesterday and kicked up a lot of crap but didnt think much of it, but now thats really the only thing i can think of as to what happened. the death toll includes all my favorite fish in the tank, my gorgeous and mellow 7.5in male argentea who didn't pick on anybody and all 4 of my wild caught Geo surinamensis. also lost my raphael cat and 2 pictus and the male from my gold dempsey pair :( only survivors are 3 silver dollars i just got a little while ago, and female cuban, severum and gold dempsey juvies and my delhezi bichir and pleco. all of the cichlids and silver dollars were gasping at the surface until i cleaned the filter and got the water circulating again...:swear: probably going to do an overhaul with this tank now but at this point i don't even know what i want to do with it...

Oh Sarah that does suck. I had a similar situation in one of my tanks where the impeller got stuck after a small power failure just a glitch really but the filter stopped and couldn't start, all the fish were gasping for air when I walked past the tank a couple of hours later. Luckly I saw it in time and got it restarted or I would have had the same thing happen to me.

Sorry for your loss. A sad day indeed.

Oh no, I'm really sorry to hear it Sarah. It's a sad day in Texas now too. :(

Did you only have one filter on the tank? I run mulitple filters on the large tanks...on the smaller ones I run a filter and an air pump in case the filter impeller jams, which AC70's seem to do sometimes. Really really sorry to hear about your loss.

I'm starting to think it might be a good idea to invest in a battery backup surge protector for my air pumps. Anyone know how long it would blow bubbles if the power went out?

Sorry Sarah : (

After hearing about this, Im thinking the same thing. We have a hurricane potentially heading this way (and why wouldnt it? My flood insurance expired 2 weeks ago and I didnt renew it yet) and I was under the impression that the fish would be fine for at least 24 hrs if the power went out. I had 2 battery back ups but "someone" borrowed them about 3 yrs ago and then moved before returning them.

That's great idea, I have a UPS in the closet I don't use I don't know why I never thought of that! Duh! Well I'll be dusting that off later.

That's horrible, Sarah! I lost a nice Argentea during a water change mishap, courtesy of the water company's failure to promptly alert us about their chlorine problem. But i have never lost as much as you have at once. I'm really sorry and I hope this doesn't deter you too long. I second the power back up idea. That hurricane is projected for my part of Florida on Saturday. I only have a about three portable aerators that have served me well in the past but several days without power always makes me nervous. I always do big daily water changes during multiple days without power. Again, sorry for your losses and troubles. the bright side (if there is one) you have an opportunity to make some changes in the direction of your stocking. Good luck to you.

thanks everybody, and yeah i just had the one canister filter running on it because that's what i have had on it for years and have never had any issues with it, but after this i am definitely going to add a HOB to it if i can find one with a skinny enough back part to fit between the tank and the wall. i have a large bubble wand thing in there too but a couple days ago it came loose and was floating at the top of the tank and i didnt fix it back right away (kinda wish i would have now, might have kept things aerated enough for them to live until i saw them) but yeah i think i might just use it as a grow out for a bit for VRWC's jag project and then see what i want to do with it from there. I am just bummed out the most about those wild caught suris and that argentea, the argentea was the fish in that tank i had, had the longest after those pictus, the pictus were probably almost 4yrs old and the arg i have had for about 2yrs :( and the bigger pictus was like the biggest pictus i have ever seen
