what's borders?

at first i thought you meant the border to mexico or canada is closing

Right!!!! I thought the same. And then I thought... "WAIT!!!!!! The Borders are already closed what's going on here?!" lol

my borddrs closed a couple months ago , everything was for sale , the chairs , shelfs, ladders, everything, i asked how much for one of the lady workers lol 50% i said

I heard Barnes and Nobles is the last chain bookstore across the US

Anyone have a bookamillion near them? they have 200 stores (borders closed 230 stores five months ago which was 30 percent of their stores) They're the third largest book store behind B&N and Border. i would imagine that Amazon.com does more business then bookamillion though.

i don't think losing borders will necessarly hurt the landscape of book stores. if anything, it gives the mom and pops store more fire power. in my city alone (small college town of about 150k i think) we have 6 used book stores or mom and pop bookstores plus a borders and a barnes and noble. losing borders here will not kill us. i was reading how barnes and nobles is actually struggling though.....they're currently up for sale and amazon.com is kicking their arses in online sales, ereader sales and ereader material

The demise of book stores foreshadows the demise of fish stores...

Wal-Mart, Borders, Barnes and Noble (and Amazon) took out the mom and pop stores...and online and general big box stores are taking out Borders and B&Ns.

I'd guess that dog obsession (i.e. refusing to feed food from Wal-Mart and bags of dog food being too big to buy online/ship) and high margins are the only things keeping big box "pet" retailers solvent.

None of this bodes well for LFS. Just like local book stores, their big differentiator is (supposed to be ;) ) customer service / local expertise. Which many people just won't pay for.

I don't look forward to the day when the only books/music/fish that will be available will be online or through Wal-Mart.

Viva la jobs in China!

Not that you're necessarily wrong, but I definitely disagree. Big book stores like Borders went out of business because people can get books shipped anywhere in the country for a very cheap shipping cost. That won't happen with fish, because most people aren't willing to pay $30-40 just for shipping, which is usually what happens. There's also the risk of shipping live animals, which most people don't want to deal with.

You are correct that some mom and pop LFSs may go out of business, but if an LFS make wise financial decisions and doesn't charge ridiculous prices, I'd think they would be fine. I don't know what it's like around you, but a lot of the mom and pop stores around here actually charge around the same or less than the chain stores and the mom and pop stores have a much better selection.

Also, another thing that you failed to mention is that one huge reason that book stores are going out of business: e-readers. Were it not for the Kindle and other e-readers like it, I honestly think that Borders would have stayed in business. Also, the fact that Barnes and Nobles has an e-reader is certainly helping them to stay in business. The problem isn't just that people aren't buying books from places other than online, it's that a lot of people aren't buying any actual books at all.
