I know this probably isn't the right place to post this but anyway.......

I was excited the other day, because my roommate told me his uncle had a 55g complete setup that he no longer wanted and all I had to do was go drain it, pick it up and I could have it, Needless to say I jumped on it with the quickness.

My excitement quickly diminished when I seen the state that this aquarium was in. He had apparently moved out of this house, cut off the electricity, and just left the fish there to die. I unfortunately did not make it there in time to save any of the fish, including a 6" frontosa. The entire tank was covered in brown algae and all the accessories are covered to the point of almost being unusable. To say that it was one of the gross is the understament of the year. Some people just don't need to be taking on the responsibility of caring for a living being.

It has taken me 2 hours of hardcore scrubbing to clean the tank, and I haven't even touched the accessories yet. But it's starting to look better.

Has anyone else ever had a situation like this???

I bought my 55 and accessories from someone off craigslist. I had to throw out the lids, lights, and filter because they smelled so bad. I cleaned everything with ammonia, but it was practically pointless. In addition to the smell, there was a nice brown coat of something covering nearly everything...:yuck:

aw too bad for the fish but nice deal for you. maybe you had to scrub the sh*t out of it but at least it was free!! id scrub down a dirty tank if i got to keep it. what kind of filtration cam with it?
post some pics!! what do u plan on puttin in there?

trust me by the time you get it all cleaned up it will be a bad memory did you take before and after pics?

80% of my tanks have all been used purchases so yeh seem my share of nasty nasty nasty things but hey free or cheap set ups are exactly that free and cheap so its worth the elbow grease to get them back to normal

the museum set up I just took over the maintenance contract was a class a example of neglect but after a bit of hard work it came out ok. I even had to wear a mask and gloves when I cleaned up one of the tanks as an acrid haze came out of the tank when I disturbed the now completely dehydrated substrate bones and all

:OMG: Those poor fish that is soooo sad.:(

It came with a penguin emperor 400, 2 150w heaters, and the stand, so it's not to bad. I didn't get to take before pics because my phone was dead, but I'll be taking after pics once I have it all set up. I plan using it as an extra grow out tank for my 2.5" Ebjd(m), 3" Jd(f), 5.5" Silver aro, 4" Sengal bichir and 4" Royal pleco

WOW, that's awesome. I'd love to find on that needed cleaned for free.

It was a great deal, the only thing that really upset me was having to scoop all of these great fish out of the hell hole they were left in

I can understand that. It's horrible to see someone leave a defenseless creature to suffer. Off topic, your avatar is awesome. You own a managuense?
