I've Never Used Water Conditioners...Anyone Else?

RD. pretty much summed up the consensus. I too use seachem safe as it is basically the cheapest conditioner I can get.

Just reinforcing a few points.

If you allow tap water to sit or age, the chlorine or chloramine will dissipate.

Chloramine WILL NOT dissipate to any practical extent unless you're aging it for months on end.

There are a few ways to check if your tapwater has chloramine
- check with your municipal water supply
- buy a TOTAL (not free) chlorine test kit eg., from pool shop
- just use your API ammonia test tube. if tap water has ammonia in it, usually chloramine is being used

My municipal water supply is listed as only have chlorine, and it has no ammonia, so I am pretty confident it contains no chloramine. That said, I still condition my water for chlorine as I fill directly with a hose from the faucet during water changes. Chances are that the bulb aerator on the end of the hose is enough to dissipate the chlorine but I'm not taking any chances. If there is chlorine in the water you add, it can create chloramine if your tank has free ammonia., eg., during fishless cycling, and thus wipe out many weeks of cycling BB.

Rd and duanes stated all of this already.
