** I've officially KILLED them all **

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had an outbreak of ich this fall. I was afraid to do anything. After watching them get ich worse for a couple of days I started raising the temp of the tank. I made sure I had good oxygen buy way of air pumps hooked into my powerheads and extra stones. I raised it to 92 degrees anf held it there for three weeks. After the first week my Clowns started acting normal again with no signs of stress from the temp. After three weeks there was not a sign of ich anywhere and it has not returned.

Glad to hear that worked for you. Beware though, that probably wasn't a very strong strain of Ick... Welcome fellow TX MFK'er!!!!

I've been keeping loaches for 8 years now and never had ich due to generous use of UV and quarantine procedures. My experience is shared by many others: UV = no more ich. If you run UV long enough, it can break the reproductive cycle of ich in your tank, making it extinct, and then you can stop using it as long as you don't add any new fish/plants/water. I think it can also be used to treat ich outbreaks since, like meds, it kills the free swimming form to prevent reinfestation of the fish. However, UV will do it without endangering the fish.

Why deal with meds that often kill your fish before the ich can? Why go through the heartbreak of having your loaches wiped out over and over again? Just get UV and be done with it.

I agree with squint here. The petstore I work for uses UV sterilizers whenever we get new shipments of goldfish and koi, as they are very sensitive to ick and most times come readily infected in the order.

Get yourself a UV sterilizer. Worth the money and peace of mind.
