Jack Dempsey cichlid info?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yea i agree. convicts can be nasty even to fish that are much larger. and when they are in a group its even worse. make sure there are plenty of caves and places for the JD to hide. and maybe u should try to get another JD but get a female. u might even end up having babies.

how many male cons in a 55g then?

ordinarily I'd say "one", but if no females are present, you might be able to pull it off in a 55G . . . but I agree with the statement above, you need to have multiple caves (flower pots, etc.) so each fish can stake out a territory . . .

well right now the Dempsey and my Pink con are always together, my Black convict is somewhat of a loner but does swim with them too.....they all seem to get along, the convicts respect the Jack and the Jack respects them and the convicts chase each other here and there but everything is cool...hope everything works

yea sounds like you might have a more friendly jack but all the colors of that fishes personality will come out once it gets comfortable an realizes what it can do an get away with the jack i had was one mean Fu*#er an he was only 5''s an i had 2 oscars almost twice the size of him, an he chased them around constantly an nipped at them constsantly only time will tell an jacks are used to a more murky water also so having prestine water conditions as far as clear or not wont make a diff an forget about the tempature thing it made no diff with mine an i bought driftwood an pots an caves an it didnt matter either so just hope you got a good tempered jack an all will be well

As many above have said, JD's come with a ranger of personality.

I've got a male and a female in my tank. During breeding they can get a bit temperamental but I have not noticed any over the top behavior.

When not in breeding mode they are still rather skittish, I don't see them very often as they like to be behind caves and rocks. This seems to make them the most comfortable.

IF you get a female (once you are sure this is a male) I would suggest just getting one. I had two and once the pair formed in a matter of days they nearly killed the other female. Or at least be ready to rehome the extra female.

Feeding wise I give a variety - hikari, frozen, flakes, etc. And I do a 50% water change at least once a week.

Coloration - both of mine are always very dark with lots of blues and greens on them. Male has more on the body and female more on the face.

Post some photos up for us please :)

I have a female Jack around 4.5 inches living with 3 cons in a 55 gallon, and she shows no aggresion what so ever. She IS the queen of the tank, but doesnt beat the other up or anything.

I dont think the guy at your lfs knew how to sex them because i think both male and female jacks have the red on the fins, not to mention the length of the fins is an "iffy" way of sexing. Its the bloches on the gill plate like people here said before.

My JD really has never been skittish, and i believe its because of the cons...the cons make a great dither fish!

Most fish will grow quite a bit their first year, but after that their growth slows down, even with excellent water conditions. It seems like a lot of people think if you work really hard and bust your butt the fish will reach it's full adult size (10 inches are more) within a year or two. No, that doesn't happen.

Take your average blue gill. According to a DNR booklet I was recently reading they will be about eight inches after five years in a pond. Their max is 16 inches. Of course you never see them that big in the wild, but I'll leave it at that.

I am growing 2 in my 75g community tank. As the previous posters have suggested - they love to eat, have great personalities (each one is different) and grow like crazy with heavy water changes. So far both mine are not aggressive - but that all depends on stock, tank size, conditions, etc. (in my experiences at least) - I throw both of them in a 10 gallon tank and they would kill each other at their size. I think that is why most LFS are hesitant with these fish, they prob have a ton of people buy them - drop them in their 25 gallon community tank at the house and come back to the LFS very very confused...lol

I hope he gets that metallic green color all over his body
