Jack Dempsey got me confused

There is 3 convicts, and like I said 2 seem to be male and female and hide in one of the clay caves. While the third never leaves the jds side.. it’s the weirdest thing. The jd doesn’t seem to mind the on convict, but always backs the other two convicts away if they come near. But never attempts to bite or eat them, she just kind of uses her size to scare them and then returns to the cave to hang with the third convict.. it’s the weirdest thing.. maybe she things the third convict is offspring?

Or is mating with the third convict, you never know

i have about a 6 inch Jack Dempsey or blue gene Jack Dempsey the pet store told me. I want to know how to determine its sex, and I want to know why it seems skittish. The fish is in a 55 gallon by itself and has been for over a month and seems terrified of me. Any suggestions??

Give it some large growing non aggressive tankmates, irridecent sharks, silver dollars, Oscar, clownknife, etc. and it should eventually break out of its shyness.

I did not pay attention to the size of the tank.

I figured out the problem, my heater broke and my tank was at 73 degrees. My water parameters are good. And I went got some other fish to keep with her ( I believe it’s a her). I got 7 platy, and I couldn’t resist and got 3 baby convicts. 2 of the convicts seem to be male and female and never leave each others side. While the third seems best friends with the jd. The third convict will sit in whatever cave the jd is in, and my jd doesn’t seem to mind. But if either of the other two convicts come to the cave the jd backed them out, but honestly not that aggressively. Haven’t seen my jd open it’s mouth once, just lets it’s size scare the convicts away, and then returns to the cave to hang with the third convict.

I agree that this looks like a female.

You've done a nice job with the tank. The water looks wonderfully clean.

Since she is eating pellets, then you should be okay now.

This got a laugh out of me, I’m scratching my head wondering why your telling him to turn his heater up to 102 degrees F then it finally dawned on me that you mean 29 degrees C. Lol conversions are fun. XD
