my Dempsey is 7 inches and around 10-11 months old (male). my question is how big is a "very large" dempsey and how big is a "common sized" Dempsey (full grown)? and wud you say mine is big for its age?

Large demoseys aren't so my h in length as in overall bulk. I've seen males hit around 10-11 that's a large Dempsey. Average is around 9 ish in my area

Max length is probably in the 11-12" range. I say for its age your at a very solid spot in length. Dont be surprised if inches come harder to get and he starts to more bulk up.

BTW, do you know what's the sex of your JD? If it's male yes it would hit the 11-12" mark range but if not, it's much smaller.
They can get to 10", like chunky rolling pins.

In cenotes in the Yucatan I've seen mature pairs 9"-10", but in one cave entrance there was an old male at least 12". And years ago at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago I saw a pair where the male seemed larger than 1 ft.
yea I notice these ones are kinda slow moving mine is still lightning fast and skinny. I guess he has a lot of bulking to do
They grow about the same rate as a GT. Grow real fast till 6-7in then slow way down about .5in a month after that. Max size I've seen a male is 12in's, but he was old like 10yrs+....takes a while to get a big JD. People get spoiled by oscars, jags, dovii's growth rates
However keep the temp around 80F, feed some good pellets (but don't overfeed), & more importantly give it plenty of wc's. This will maximize the growth rate.

Male JD's can get up to 15" or so. They don't necessarily grow very fast so just be patient, keep your tank clean and feed him/her a quality diet.
