no ideal on venting, but no mistaking a mature male with a mature female.
 
get a 6" bull male and see what happens. my little female started spawn with a large male when she was between 3 and 4 inches.
 
little back story on that, I had a little female JD in the grow tank, she was bulling all the other JD in the tank, in the 180 I had a and still have a 7" male 2 adult Oscars and a large female jag, i said fine you fish food. had enough. to my suprise she paired with the male JD and they took over more than half the tank, now they a mated pair in 75g.
 
she was no more than 3" at the time.
